I lost the last respect I had for him that he let himself fall into his enemies' hands when with his money he could have gone out painlessly after one last night of gluttony and insulin.

The hands of the law as in the long arm of, they're not his enemy. Now, they are his protector. I almost pity the ugly bastard. He should have moved as much money as he could and slid into some stinkin' third world sewer like a lice crawlin' rat, but I never thought of him and had no respect to lose.
