the DEVIL'S RAIN (1975)

 This would be a real fun movie if it wasn't so vague. It starts with Bill Shatner confronting Ernest Borgnine in a ram-shackle western town. We see they are somehow old enemies from years ago. Of course Ernie is the head of a Satanic cult thing, and the Shat is his foe. Lots of nonsense, with folks like Ida Lupino, Eddie Albert and John Travolta (!) doing a lot of nothing. It does have a cool ending, when Ernie turns into a ram horned demon and all the satanists melting into a nasty, sticky goo!  

Ida Lupino-I don't even recall her having any lines! She was also in FOOD OF THE GODS (1976) at this point in her career!

Can you believe this cast? It's amazing! It's astounding! It scares the hell out of me! Who would have thought disco movie icon John Travolta would start out here, "Grease" was made before it but "The Devil's Rain" hit the box office first. Add Shatner to any plot with Satanists and it's going to be good, he sold something for his fame and it appears to have been the ability to speak like a regular human being.  

I think our esteemed leader was thinking of the musical Grease (1971).  The film is 1978...

THE MUSICAL is 1971.  I wrote THE MUSICAL... as in stage musical.    

The obscure 1971 Grease film had  NO TRAVOLTA.  The 1971 film according to IMDB had a $2k budget...

actually Grease was filmed in (1977) and i believe Saturday Night Fever was filmed in (1976) if i'm not mistaken. i saw this one a year or two ago and it had some good ideas that's not even a question but the film was just plain terrible. Travolta also was introduced to his Cult during the making of it actually.

Shatner honestly can be good i think he has since stopped going over the top and over acting & when you see him on Boston Legal he's freaking Brilliant in the role. or his Twilight Zone episodes as well. my favorite Shatner Story was during the filming of the 1st black kiss on that he did on Star Trek. they wanted him to do just the Standard kiss they'd have on tv at the time & he really got into it and so they said cut we don't want you to do that do it like this & so he did but his back was to the camera and so they gave up. i give him props for that it helped get made in some ways i think Guess who's coming to Dinner ?

but as for this film honestly i've seen worse that he's done. i forget the name of that awful B movie he directed and wrote from (2002) i'll have to look it up but that one if anyone remembered it was freaking terrible. this film though had a great cast and Borgnine really looked like he was having fun as the Devil.

the make-up was really good too.

To my mind it started very strongly but got a shade dull as Tom Skerrit's character and his dull other half did their investigating before becoming seriously entertaining towards the big set piece finale.

I liked what happened to her at the end, when she got stuck in the globe thing for seemingly all eternity. I also liked it when she turned into Ernest Borgnine at the very end before the credits started. It was goofy but clever at the same time.

The 70' horror crowd certainly loved a proper downbeat ending and that had just the right amount of pessimism and sheer ridiculousness.
