When Stop Making Sense came out, I was in university and it was all the rage. So I went to see it and completely failed to understand what all the fuss was about. Years later I caught it on television, and found it actually quite good.

Expectations play a big role.

The Monster From the Ocean Floor (1954): came to appreciate this low budget sci-fi horror monster movie much more upon re-watching it. Same with The Atomic Submarine (1959) - eventually I came to love lots of low budget stuff from the 50s and 60s.
