What is the difference between the two? I also what to what type of person I am?

Personal Profile:

I love to study.
I love rpgs especially board games.
I love sci-fi.
I am crappy at sports.
My sex life is zero and will probably remain like that for a long time.
Girls always laugh at me even ugly ones.
I am very smart.

well a geek actually means"some who bites chickenheads off" so i dont see that on ur list so ur not that. and i basically i like most of the things u like such as rpgs and it be even be more "nerdy"i read comics and watch anime. but no one ever labeled me that as "nerd". maybe cause iam a police cadet fo NYPD. u shouldnt label ur self either.

I think there is a difference between the two with some overlap. You seem to lean more towards the geek but have some nerd.

While both tend to be smart and lack a many social skills, it is in different ways

Geeks tend to be more into sci-fi, rpgs etc... Geeks tend to like and focus on  many non-standard culture things at the same time.  The things they like tend to contain lots of detail.  While they like several things they are not necessarily good at any of them or specialize in them (but may).  Geeks tend to blend with sociecty slightly better than nerds but make bigger geeks of them selves.  While they interact better they can be annoying

Nerds may like many of the things that geeks do but are not dependent upon most of them. Nerds tend to fixate on only one or two specific things and tend to know a lot about them and be very good at them (these think generally don't have a social structure to them).  Nerds don't socializeas well with others becuase they share less common grounds. Nerds interact well with other nerds in the same area of nerddom.  If left alone nerds are most harmless.

Of my main group of movie watching friends.  I and one other are more nerd types. (both Ph.d's). 2 other are geek types.  One is a slob type but isn't really geeky or nerdy.

We all like the same things but to different extents and approch them in different ways.

I considure myself 50% nerd,  15% geek, 35% normal

My most nerdy tendency is my exuberance about things most people don't give a damn about. So as I got older I had to reign myself and quit correcting people when they got some arcane fact wrong because a lot  of the time I was considered to be obnoxious. (which i was)

I think a lot of 'nerds' do well in social situations, especially at work.

Geeks I would classify as the type who can't adapt and shun any social interaction.  I also think they are the type that have the attitude that they are mentally superior to everyone around them.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

I always thought the definitions were as follows:

NERD = Academically astute but socially inept

GEEK = Laser beam focused on their obsession.

I don't think that all nerds are geeks.  Nor are all geeks, nerds.  In my youth, I would have considered myself in the third group. That is:

DORK = Goofy, prone to embarassment.

As for you Gecko, I would think that , by my OLD definitions, you would be a nerd.  However, I don't know you personally and I have found that all of these labels are relative.  I mean, does William Buffet call Bill Gates a nerd?  Probably not, but I bet the captain of the football team at Bill's high school did.

I would think that your social woes will pass as you grow older.  How do I know this?  One universal truth my friend:  GIRLS love tough, bad boys who drive motorcycles and don't give a damn about anything.  WOMEN love the guys who make them laugh, feel comfortable, show them a good time, and curl their toes.

Never thought much about it. I suppose the two are both intelligent, and could share many common traits and unconventional interests, but I'd distinguish them mainly in their attitude toward work and play.

A nerd would be more work-oriented. He would be adept and somewhat passionate about something that would be considered practical or at least respectable - mathematics, physics, computers, history. This would come at the expense of fashion sense, social skills and possibly hygeine.

Geeks have a decent understanding and interest in science and so forth, but they are more leisure-oriented, with a passion for movies, games, music, trivia, etc. They can move in wider social circles than nerds, and generally fit in with regular folks - until certain subjects come up. For example, I recently told my wife and her sister that I used to replay entire comedy albums in my head when I finished exams half an hour early and couldn't leave my seat. They just stared at me.

As others have suggested, nobody is pure nerd or pure geek, but tends to lean one way or the other, kind of like a Myers-Briggs test.

dont worry, things would  be pretty  worse if you were living in the eighties,  remeber all the old films about nerds like " Revenge of the Nerds/ Revenge Of the Nerds II - Nerds in Paradise" or my fav one about nerds " weird science" yes, that one where two sixteenish high school nerds  create the girl of they dreams with a  ........1985 computer???????maybe a msx2? a commodore computer? it must be a joke right?.
it seems that nowadays being a geek its socially  acceptable, but if u are real nerd, what it seems to be that u are, then u can always sit in front of your computer, remeber u are now in the 21 century, technology its better now than 20 years ago, or at least it should be, put   your scanner to work,  if they did it in the eighties for sure u can do the same or better nowadays , anyway dont forget to put on your head  a bra, then the experiment will work it out better, but be carfully u do it right, maybe u dont want to have  as a girlfriend somebody with the albert einstein body and a supermodel brain, do u??
anyway, i have the feeling that almost everybody here in this forum we are or geeks or nerds, im a mix of both.
am i right?

Everyone has at least one NERD-ism. Lately people try to disguise their NERD-isms by adding "-ER" to the end...as in gamER..trekER, or calling themselves an "Enthusiast" ie. sports ENTHUSIAST....gun ENTHUSIAST. But, we all really know that they are game geeks, trekkies, sports freaks and gun nuts!

My name is DJ and I'm a movie geek(hi DJ). I take a fair amount of flak about my "enthusiasm" for movies, but also, I'm the one people come to with a movie related question.

I interact well with others, I'm good at one sport(crap at all others), I have a sex life(yeah for me!), and hate studying. But, the nerdism that I do have takes up a large amount of my non-sports playing, sex life having, interacting with others free time.

I say, embrace your nerdism. Be proud that you have a sick and sad knowledge of all things movie. Revel in the fact that not even your dearest loved ones will watch a film with you. Let your geek flag fly!! Still, I wouldn't tell too many people about the role-playing games, that's just weird.....who wants to watch my copy of Tower of Screaming Virgins???

Everyone has potentially fatal flaws, but yours involve a love of soldiers' wives, an insatiable thirst for whiskey, and the seven weak points in your left ventricle.

I wrote a thread awhile back titled, "And I thought we were all a little geeky!"

In it, Susan mentioned a funny test to see how geeky you are.

Go here to take it:

http://www.innergeek.us/geek.html

What were your results?

maria paula

the result was that im a "geek" but i really thought i was a nerd with a nice social life anyway :)

BeyondTheGrave
