Sitting Duck

So recently I've been making my way through The Expanse and am about two thirds through the second season. So far there have been two instances where a character is being interrogated by a Martian naval officer who pops a pill near the start of the session. Does the significance of the pill ever get explained in series? Are details only to be found in the novels the series was adapted from? Or is it left a mystery?

ER

They're called focus drugs, and they let the interrogator's senses become heightened so that he can hear the subject's heartbeat and observe pupil dilation and respiration.
