Strange Brew

We are a strange brew in that we value movies so much. I was thinking the other day if my apt were to burn down what items I would quickly grab and I had an immediate image of me standing over my balcony throwing my picture albums and all my dvd's to safety.  Then i'm sure i'd make the local news for that one.
And everytime I fantasize about winning the lottery it's not about buying a hot car or fantasy vacation but buying a house just so i can have my own media/theater room. Heck i'd really love to own a theater and make it the most unique experience anyone has never had.

Is it something we're born with, something we aquire? I dunno, i remember being just a little kid, 3 o4 and loving those creature from the black lagoon movies, king kong, heck..xanadu. While kids now are suckled on disney i was raised on all kinds of films - but i've always had this deep interest in the movies more than anyone i knew. While it might be really extraordinary to be involved in making a film it somehow might take away the magic, the fantasy of it all. I guess i'm the person who'd rather be in the story than writing it.

But then there are those who love bad movies. It made me wonder if there were such cults hundreds of years ago who sat around discussing their favorite bad play over a pint of ale.  

and yet somehow i never understand with as much money as movies seem to make why people I know always smirk at my obsession with them. "It's just a movie" is a comment that I cannot stand. Sure, let's find something you are passionate about and totally belittle you for having anything beyond normal interest in it, shall we?  At least i can always find solice here ;-)

In my experience, people who like bad movies are universally comedian-types who enjoy and make a hobby of making other people laugh.  Bad Movies are an awesome backdrop for this activity.  Look at Andrew for instance - his reviews are all legit with good insight, but the primary goal of each of them is to be funny.

If there's a humorless person on this board, I must be missing his posts.

I know what you mean Eirik. In my oral communcation class I'd often get laughs from using Badmovies as a subject. I did a topic about how to survive a slasher movie/how to have to Killer survive the Final Girl; A obeturary about Bruce Campbell; and I had to sell a product and mine was "The Horror Movie Survival Kit" (includes Minigun with flamethrower and Rocket Launcher attachments, as well as clothes that next come off) HA HA! I'm gonna miss that class so much. So yeah I agree with you Eirik.

Sports would be a good choice; many people are passionate about them and you can tell them, "it's just a game".

The commetns about humor and bad movies seem just about right. I remember long before mst3K became this cult phenom, i used to do it in my own living room. My friends thought i was off the wall at first but soon learned how much fun it was. Of course i used to go one step more by completely muting the movie (or any given tv show) and add-lib my own dialogue. Far more amusing if you ask me ;-)
And very little people get my humor..lol


John - but not many sports fanatics will own sports games on dvd and watch them over and over and over. mostly because once you know how the game ends there's no point in seeing it again, some won't even watch a game if they find out ahead of time the score.unfortunately sports fanatics are far more socially accepted than movie fanatics. at least my hobby is cooler? ;-)

Susan, I know exactly what you mean about winning the lottery.  It is often a day dream of mine at work to win about 90 mil or so and build a dream house for my wife and kid.  Of course it would have to have a full sized theater.....or on a bad day at work ; a full sized IMAX. :o)

My theater room would resemble an actual theater room, except with more comfy seats. Fully on concession stand in the back, u bet i want a popcorn popper, soda machine and candy. The encased movie posters for ambiance, deep red drapes down the walls,

....oh and yes -  a balcony! ;-)

True, but consider; Sports fans are usually fanatical about their favorite teams. Sports fans will get together with other fans and argue over every little detail of a game. They'll organize get-togethers, sometimes on a weekly basis, just to watch a game. They'll get VERY upset if they're planning to watch a game they've taped and you tell them the score. If the power should go off in the middle of a game, they're likely to pile into a car and drive somewhere where they can watch the rest of it. It may be more socially acceptable, but it's just as strange, possibly even more so when you consdier the fact that most movies at least look unique while all games of a given type look about the same.
