I watched this today: it is an incredible movie that, while it pays homage to the 1986 film, can and does stand on its' own as balls to the wall, thrill a second entertainment. It is  chock full of action and is at times, very funny.

Spoiler alert to those who are wondering, yes, Val Kilmer appears in the film as Iceman: although he has had health issues and can no longer speak, just seeing him - even though he's in the movie for only a few minutes - is great but a bit sad to tell the truth. When Ice and Maverick hug each other, I wanted to give them both a hug as the emotion I felt was a little too real.  :bluesad:

I don't like Cruise or Kilmer or the original movie. So I have no desire to watch this glossy flag waving cartoon junk.

I never saw the original, so no sense of nostalgia for me. The dogfights were very good. Overall I found it entertaining enough while watching it, then forgettable afterwards--typical summer blockbuster stuff.

You surprise me again.  Though I will say the original is just as you describe the new one.  Forgettable.  I can't remember if I saw the original in a theater or video tape.

I think that's the only part of the new one I'd like.  I get choked up too with sentimental and old enemies finding friendship.

I was much more snobbish about movies back when it came out. I took pride in dismissing stuff that was mega-popular with the masses. I was into high art and pure crap, not interested in the populist world in-between. Nowadays I can enjoy popcorn fluff for what it is.

....I've also never seen Top Gun

I always thought TOP GUN was like cowboys comparing dicks.

I felt that way about STAR WARS and did not see it I think until a re-release probably at a drive in the summer before RETURN with partying and loved it.  Probably no popcorn.  But I only payed attention to the first 3 which got dopey but remained fun.  After that?  I don't get it.
So serious.    So dark.  :twirl: :teddyr:
I feel the same way about most of the superhero franchises or pretty much the last 20 years of Hollywood with rare exception.
