I went out with a couple of friends last saturday and we thought it would be great to end the day  watching a DVD movie, and since I was the one who proposed the idea we ended up watching this re-dubbed and re-released Jet Li DVD (it was actually first released in Asia on 1994). We had a great time with it, cheering up and laughing all the time. That Jameson bottle may be part of it, though.

It is a Hong Kong movie alright, a period piece (the period ambientation was surprisingly good) with a really thin plot which only serves as an excuse for jokes and constant wire-fu. Fights were staged by Corey Yuen, and I would say this is the Jet Li movie I have enjoyed the best, together with "Romeo must die". The comedy works well (Jet Li is followed in his adventures by a couple of thieves and a band of Shaolin kids, just imagine), and the fights are just plain awesome, some of the best I've ever seen Li in. Highly recommended, both for bad movie lovers and Jet Li fans.

I've been meaning to get this movie on DVD, and this review pretty much sold me on it.  It's one of the only Jet Li movies that I haven't seen.  Plus I'm sure I can snag it pretty cheap now.  Thanks for the review, Neville.

And wow, I thought everybody but me hated Romeo Must Die.  Glad to see I'm not the only one who liked it.

I liked the movie. I thought the clear picture was worth it to listen to the dubbed version. You should watch the Legend 2 or Fung Sai Yuk (I think that's how you spell it) This is why I actually kinda respect Dimension to be able to have these movies look awesome on a television screen. I wish they would get rid of the dubbing though.

I remember renting this, I remember being disappointed by the dubbing, and thinking that the action was underwhelming. But beyond that the details are kind of vague, except that I remember I thought "The Legend 1&2" and the first few  "Once Upon a Time In China" films (especially the second) were much better. But YMMV.

In most foreign films, subtitling is the superior and most accurate way to understand the movie.  However, with Jet Li, Jackie Chan, and other mainstream "kung fu" movies, I find that the dubbing adds to the experience- something silly to go with the cheese.
