PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1959)

Was on TCM last night.  Infamously bad, it is possibly the most inept production out of Hollywood that has reached the status of Classic.  I hadn't visited it in decades, and it's as bad as I remembered, but perfect for Halloween TV which is on but nobody watching.  The BELA bits are pathetic.

TCM Underground is now kaput as viewers were informed of that last night.

Looks OK in terms of editing and cinematography, but could have actually been good just with changes in writing, and everything else (cheap production set and actors) in place.

That's why I sent you a msg.  Aren't the BELA clips sad?
If FASTER PNSSYCAT, KILL! KILL! is the Queen of Bad Movies, PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE is the lame-ass neutered King!

The cast is fantastic! Vampira! Tor! Criswell!
Bela, sadly, is seen in a few clips. He never knew about this movie. He was dead.  :bluesad:
Ed Wood- Bless his demented heart- knew how to write, just not well!
" But one thing's sure. Inspector Clay is dead, murdered, and somebody's responsible! "

Yes- it is sad. But, it become one of the most famous movies of all time. I think Bela would be happy.

I could list a hundred Hollywood movies (even "classics") I enjoy less than PLAN 9 w/o breaking a sweat. Heck, hundreds. It's not for nothing that this film (and many of Wood's others) catapulted "bad movies" to a strange esteemed status as a legitimate form of entertainment.

I appreciate RCMerchant's comment that Wood "knew how to write" though perhaps "not well". I'd add that Wood could produce the DANKEST of dank purple prose like practically no other writer then or since. Maybe that's not writing "well" by all lights, but it hits the sweet spot for High Camp. "And remember, my friends... future events such as these will affect you... in the future!"

I've Wood once described as a genius without talent and I've always liked that description.

As for Plan 9.  What else can you really say about it that hasn't been said before.  It was "so bad it's good" before "so bad it's good" was even recognized as being a thing.

If Ed Wood worked under someone like Roger Corman, I think he could have A) gotten better B) been a decent work for hire for exploitation like films.

That being said Plan 9 from Outer Space I feel is being sadly left out of "great bad movie" lists. Ed Wood walked and then fell on his face so that others could run.....and then fall on their face even harder (Wiseau,Fragasso,Y.K. Kim).

When my Ma went to Woodstock, Aunt MeeMa cooked good food and let us watch ChillerTheater.
The opening features Vampira in PLAN 9- imbedded into my cotton candy brain.

WOW, what an artifact... love it. Such a distillation of the greatness AND the limitations of Wood's writing... assuming he wrote the copy himself. At least it's a grand REFLECTION of his greatness and limitations.

"Say, Mr. Wood, what'll we see in your new picture?"
"Furious combat, folks! Plus a spectacular explosion! And lest I forget... invincible ghouls!"
"...Anything else?"
"...Uh... also... blood-thirsty ghouls!"

.......And "horror-man" Bela Lugosi...!  :bouncegiggle: :hot:
