Great Theme Night Idea

The 80s theme nights seem to be on the back burner, since my wife and her sister cooked up a better idea. Funny that for all the effort I've put into selling Lori on theme nights, she comes up with a great  one on her own, and manages to plan a whole party around the movies.

I guess it was because I took her and her sister to the bar in my home town, where I used to hang out in days gone by. Haven't been there in years, but it hasn't changed. Still kind of a rough place, still a dive, still has heavy metal blasting, a layer of grime and a lot of sketchy looking people. A place designed with but one purpose - getting drunk. It felt great to spend even half an hour there. I felt young, a thought that makes me feel old in hindsight.

Anyway, in these surroundings, Lori got to telling her sister about a crappy trucker movie I made her watch last winter. Anybody seen High Ballin'? It's a Canadian movie, set in the southern states but filmed here (the CN Tower makes an appearance). Basically Jerry Reed reprises his character from Smokey and the Bandit, with a different name, and Peter Fonda rehashes his Easy Rider role. Plenty wrong with this movie.

Next thing I know, they're planning Trucker Night. So, we're inviting a few friends over for a dinner of steak and eggs, followed by a double feature of Smokey and the Bandit and Breaker Breaker, with pork rinds, beef jerky and Bud for snacks. In honour of S&TB, I'll probably get Coors instead of Bud. Everybody is required to dress as a trucker stereotype, talk in CB lingo, and have an appropriate handle. So far, we're planning on doing it the weekend after next. I'll let everybody know how it goes.

Anybody else do something like this?

Pick up a copy of "Black Dog"...the only film to ever burn up on the big screen right in front of my eyes.
Seriously, the projector melted the film.
A cheesy trucker film.

And to add a little horror to it, "Joy Ride".

"Road Games" - Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis long hauling Down Under dealing with a psycho killer roaming the highways.

"Think Big" - an ultra-goofy low rent trucker comedy starring the steroid addled, talent deficient Barbarian Bros.

"Sorcerer" or "Wages of Fear" for more "high brow" truck driving suspense.

The truck diappears for most of the movie, but how about Jack Burton's quest to retrieve his beloved "Porkchop Express". You can rarely go wrong with "Big Trouble in Little China".

Well, my wife chose the movies, and I'm so proud of her, I'm not going to interfere. For some reason, Breaker Breaker made an impression on her, and I'll agree it is cheesy bad. Smokey and the Bandit, of course, is a classic, and one of my all-time favourites. Both are in my own collection. I'd say the lineup is set, although I wish I could find a copy of High Ballin'. That was her first choice, but it's got to be rare. We caught it on satellite the first time.

So, anybody else done a theme night of any kind?

We did a Planet of the Apes marathon about 10 years ago. It wasn't really a theme but was fun anyway.
