I recommend everyone here see "The Substance." You'll be shocked that a gory B-movie got nominated for an Oscar. The climax looks like a Troma movie--seriously. But it is excellent!

ok... so out of every film nominated for something it looks like the only thing I've seen so far is

Dune: Part Two which was easily my favorite movie of 2024

I bought Alien: Romulus and it recently arrived, but I haven't got to it yet

The Last Ranger (Best Live Action short) is a South African short film so

So far I've only seen Dune 2 and The Substance. I really liked The Substance, and I hope it wins something. I don't quite get the hype about Dune 2. It is impressive to be sure, but after Dune 1, we knew Villeneuve could pull something off like this. So I'm less blown away by it.

There was a time when watching the awards was something I looked forward to but it's been over a decade since I've been able to summon any interest in the Oscars at all, with this year registering not just disregard but genuine ignorance about almost all of these movies. It's a shame a fun, fine movie like the second installment of Dune doesn't have much of a shot, because lauding a film like that would show the academy still had a soul somewhere within it.
