Over in Sicily Mount Etna has had its biggest eruption in several years.

QuoteMount Etna has erupted in Sicily, spewing a huge column of gas and ash into the sky above the Italian island.

Footage shared on social media showed people running for their lives down the mountainside of Europe's largest and most active volcano, as a thick column of smoke intensified above them.

Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said in a widely reported statement that the volcano was experiencing strong strombolian explosions – a type of eruption – "of growing intensity".

"Over the past few hours, the falling of a little thin ash has been flagged in the Piano Vetore area," the statement said. They have since announced that the eruption is over.

When I went over in 2014 our tour stopped there.  The mountain is always more or less active so even then it was spewing a little bit of ash and gas.  I picked up a small tray formed from some of Etna's lava.  Not sure where it is now.  I believe I gave it to my Grandma and I'm not sure where it went from there after she passed.
God of making the characteristic which becomes dirty sends the hurricane.

I'd actually be more worried about Mount Vesuvius because of all the people living next to it.

Indeed.

I'm surprised volcanology hasn't advanced to the point where they could predict an event like this beforehand.
I'll take you places the hand of man has not yet set foot...

I used to have a friend who lives in Valdivia Chile. You would think they'd have elaborate escape routes planned and stuff but from what I recall there was very little of that in place.
