Besides the scene sounds completely out of sync with the tone of the rest of the movie. Just one last bit of dark overkill on the whole "I'm even supposed to be here" gag, and somehow proving that Randal really was right, if he had just told them no or had quit already he'd have lived. Then again maybe Smith was stoned and watching the Burt Reynolds cop flick "Hustle" when he wrote it.

 I believe he said his reasoning was 2 things,
A) That every good indie film the main character dies
B) To put teh perfect ironic ending to "I'm not even suppose to be here today"
