Ever since I learned to use pictures in my posts, I've noticed that some websites on the Net will not let you use their pics.

To get the pics' URL, I right-click on the pic and select "Properties".
I then select the URL, copy it and then use the {img} thing to display it.
It will show up for about a half hour to one hour and then when I go back to the post, the pic has disappeared and been replaced with one of those empty boxes with the placeholder icon.
The IMDB is the most notorious for not letting anyone use pics on their website.

What the hell!?

Do any of you know how and why this happens?
Why does it show up continuously for an hour or so then go away?
Do any of you know what type of programming websites use to prevent us from using pics on their sites?

Why do they not want us to use their pics?

They don't want you to use their pics because it is costing them bandwidth.

When you copy a location from them and then paste it onto a board so that the picture shows, the picture is still being linked to their site.  So eventhough it's on this board, everyone who views it is using the bandwidth from the original site to view the picture.

And bandwidth costs LOTS of money.

Ah...that would explain it.
Cheap sunsob***hes I say!

That also explains that every pic that I'm able to use continuously is only from the RICH websites like Yahoo and others who can afford the extra bandwidth.

You can copy the image to a disk and load it to your own site as if it is your picture, Some web services have what is called a transloader were you can just type in the address and rename the image onto your own site. Then you can do the URL thing using your own bandwidth.

Most sights don't block the image, but imdb and the bigger names do.

I like the old poster art and have been thinking of saving all the great movie posters on disk. Before everyone blocks their website images.

IMDB runs a very good, free service.  It costs them to run that service.  To pay for cost of providing that service, they sell advertising.  Sites that tend to offer free services with advertising tend not to like people to link direcetly to images because then you are using their resource (bandwidth plus the effort to provide the content in the first place) without them getting the advertising benefit. I don't really hold it against them; it beats a world without something like IMDB around.

Besides, the images in posts can be pretty annoying sometimes.  Links would be much preferred

just copy the same URL and use it as a link, then you can link to just the image. like this:

You mean the way that right-clicking on IMDB photos and selecting Save Picture As no longer works? If so, there's an easy way around that; Just save the complete web page. This will also save all the graphic files, including the picture that you can't save normally.
