Shatner sings! (well, sort of)

I heard a brief excerpt from William Shatner's latest album. It went something like this:
Live life,

All said in the Voice of Doom. Gripping stuff!

Yeah, Shatner's version of Common People actually got a bit of radio play around here recently, probably until the station was flooded with complaints. I thought it was a hoot.

Of course, I've got a CD of assorted songs by Shatner and Nimoy. Love the way the Shat just gives a dramatic reading of the lyrics. His Mr. Tambourine Man is a classic. Nimoy was no slouch either, with his renditions of If I had a Hammer, Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town, and the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Funny stuff.

I got this album the day it came out-- Great, great stuff! I especially love "I Can't Get Behind That," the duet/rant with Henry Rollins (which ends with Shatner screaming, "I can't get behind a FAT ASS!!!"). I think Allmusic.com summed it up best when they said the new album is just as bizarre as the one he did in the 60s, but for entirely different reasons.

Folds said he bought Transformed Man at a garage sale when he was kid and it changed his life.  He also said in the same interview that what people don't get about Shatner is that he is in on the joke.

My cousin always used to tell me about the Rocketman clip-- He taped it off TV when he was real young-- But I never got to see it until I found it on the internet. Words cannot describe the joy that is that video. Also, if you haven't, check out the video for "Where It's At" by Beck-- He slips in a nice homage.

That's what I love about Shatner. He's reached this point where he's just funny because he's Shatner, and he knows it. He just plays up the whole goofy Shatner image, and it's great. But that's not even necessary. All he really has to do is show his face, and it's funny, like the Wendy's commercial where the punchline was basically that the host of a party turned out to be Shatner. It's like he's become the joke, but not in a bad way.

I'm not even sure how I would class that kind of fame. The words escape me.

David Kelley had to have written the part of Denny Crane for  Shatner, it  fits him like a glove, even won him an Emmy.  "I'm Denny Crane!"  the character is a legend in his own mind.

Anybody here ever seen Free Enterprise? When the two guys that made it approached Shatner they wanted him to be this perfect Captain Kirk kinda guy, but Shatner would have none of it, so they rewrote it.

 They run into their boyhood hero Kirk in the porno section at the book store, and he is one screwed up guy.  His great plan is to produce and star in a Rap version of Julius Caesar.

I'm watching the "rocketman" video at the moment.  I had heard it before, but didn't pay much attention.

I love that movie, alot of people hate it.

I love the scene with them in the toy star yelling at the 6 year old for thinking sci-fi started with Star Wars and he goes down this laundry list of classic 60's and early 70's sci-fi and the kid just responds with "I like Men in Black too".
