Performance Capture...Excuse to give Hanks another Oscar

I know a lot of people here don't like CG in movies, but that is not the point of this gripe.  I am getting tired of Robert Zemeckis getting trotted out on every talk show and being treated like he invented the technology of performance capture just for Polar Express.

Anyone who has seen the LOTR movies knows the job that Andy Serkis did with Gollum, this is where I first heard the term performance capture.  There was lot of uproar trying to get him nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar  or to get a new category created for this type of perfomance. Well, neither happened.

Since Tom Hanks plays 5 parts in the movie, I am assuming that this will be brought up again.  Since he is a big power in Hollywood, what do you think will happen?

If he gets some special Oscar for this I will be p**sed, he spent 35 days in a studio.  Andy Serkis spent  the better part of three years actually perfoming with the actors and then doing the capture part in the studio.  I would  really like to see the guy get an official nod of some kind.

This is just a little rant I had to get off my chest. It really p**ses me off that  there are a lot great actors in the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres that never get recognized.

Yeah I mean the guy who did Gollum once had to crawl across a river bed that had been frozen solid only a few hours ago, thus extremly cold and he had to do it several times! (The scene is when Smegal tries to catch a slippery fish but it keeps getting away from him) Man I'll also be mad if Hanks get's this award. Gollum man deserves it!

That Polar Express movie would be much better without the very distracting voice of the semi-deranged officer from Private Ryan in there.  I watched the trailer and I thought it looked like a really cool concept, they were doing some very creative stuff with the animation, but Hank's voice is just sort of weird and creepy sounding.  Honestly, his voice ruined the experience for me.

Oh sorry, what were you asking?  I imagine Hanks will get ten oscars and the people who did all the work will get ignored completely.  That's why there are few things in life I have less respect for than Hollywood giving itself awards.

I agree with Susan ( in a way).  They should get Gollum (and Smeagol) to play Tom Hanks in polar express, he's two people already imagine if you split him into five. Gollum, sneezy, grumpy, dopey, bashful and mandy on the weekends. It would sure liven up my Christmas instead of all that smalzy, i love U daddy, merry xmas mister grinch crap.  Bah humbug.  Tom Hanks doesn't deserve an oscar, hasn't he got one already?
