Coolest Christmas presents....

I know there is already a Merry Christmas thread , but hey this is just about presents.

I collect Science Fiction toys,action figures, and ornaments(mostly Star Trek related), so I was very surprised when my son got me a talking Dr. Who (Tom Baker) with talking K-9 and a talking Dalek (Exterminate! Exterminate!).  I thought this was way cool, mainly because it was something I didn't  expect and will make a great addition to my colllection.

Anybody else get something cool they weren't expecting?

My teenager got Hellboy for me, because he knew I wanted it. My nine-year-old picked Van Helsing as her gift to me. But the seven year old, well HE got me The Creature From the Black Lagoon -  and I think it may be because HE wants to see it - how cool is that?

Hmmm, I don't a have a best but in genral I got a lot of Kaiju  DVD's this christmas:

Godzilla against Mechagodzilla

Gamera Guardian of the Universe

Gamera 3:Iris (now I own the whole triology!)

Gamera vs Monster X/ Monster from a Prehistoric Planet (I've always wanted to see the first movie mention. I don't think it ever got released on video before and the monster sounded cool)

So six monster movies, can you say "niiiicceee"?

I got a new computer desk.

Viva La Bam 1st season on DVD.
Ten gift certificates to the local movie theater. (10 free flicks...hell yeah!)
$10 Barnes & Noble gift card.
$10 Wal Mart gift card.
Two nice Henley style shirts.
All three Lord of the Rings books packaged in a nice box set.
Law & Order: Criminal Intent Season One on DVD.
A new G.E. microwave.
And a 34 piece pot & pan set.

I think I made out pretty well!

My wife bought me an Apex Portable DVD player which is very awesome.  I use it at work since I'm the only one there for the first hour and a half every morning.

My parents picked bought me 53 flicks on DVD.  They bought me the 50 Horror Classics DVD Box Set, Blade Runner, and the original and remake of Manchurian Candidate.

I have yet to watch any of the 50 yet, but I did revisit the original Manchurian yesterday.  It's even better on DVD, fantastic film.  The remake unfortunatly is complete crap, and the fact that the DVD is "pan and scan" doesn't help any.

Made out pretty well this year.

How big is the Dalek? Is it the one that comes in an open-front package that's more like a display than a box?

The Dalek is black and in the open type display box, I had to remove it to put in the batteries, but as always I  put it back into the package.  The Tom Baker and K-9 already had batteries installed and have access through the package to hit the talk buttons. I noticed on the back of the Dalek's package that they also make a Davros figure.

 I always liked the Daleks except for the fact all you had to do is run upstairs to get away from them. They evidently overcame that handicap in the last season of the show with Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor. They actually  showed one cllimbing the stairs using some kind of force field.  When they originally appeared during William Hartnell's turn as the Doctor they were restricted to the city in which they resided because they got their power from the metal floor.  I had a VHS with Peter Cushing as the Doctor  in Doctor Who vs. The Daleks, which was the same story as the Hartnell episodes, but the Doctor was portrayed as an eccentric old tinkerer who built the TARDIS in his back yard.

I lived in Louisiana from 1980 -1994 and Public TV there showed Dr. Who every Saturday night  and have seen  every Doctor.  John Pertwee is my favorite followed by Tom Baker.  Pertwee was the most action oriented of the lot and the first to use the sonic screwdriver.

Didn't mean to give a history lesson, but this was a neat gift and I may start collecting Dr. Who memorabilia now. l

I made out pretty good. I got a new laptop alot of movies like shaun of the dead, kill bills and blade runner. I got lots of statues. I collect comic book statues and busts.

Me too. When I was little, I saw part of one of the movies on TV, but never knew what it was. I remembered the bumpy robots though (as far I knew, that's what they were). It wasn't until many years later that I saw a picture of a Dalek in a magazine and finally know what it was that I was remembering.

Here, the first time I saw Dr. Who was when a local syndicated channel started showing the Tom Baker episodes. The very first airing of it was kind of screwed up. I'm not sure if the channel made a mistake or what, but it started with about 5-10 minutes of the scene from The Giant Robot where the Doctor checks out the creator's home and gets trapped with the robot trying to kill him. No titles, no explanation, it just started with that scene. I don't even remember if they ever even played the titles to that episode.

It aired at about 5-6PM on Saturday, and didn't last very long before they took it off for a couple months, then it reappeared early on Saturday mornings. It lasted a few months there, then disappeared again. I think it was off the air for a year or so before it turned up on PBS. For a while it was airing for 1-2 hours every weeknight. They showed all the existing episodes (at the time) except for the ones with Sylvestor McCoy. They aired his first episode, once, but not the rest. I've also only seen the second half of Colin Baker's episodes once.

The last time I saw Dr. Who was on the SciFi channel, before they refused to pay the licensing fee and lost the rights to air it. I miss it being on PBS, commercial free (except for pledge breaks).

Man, I'm glad to know that I wasn't the only B-film geek watching Dr. Who as a kid. ; ) The Daleks rock and in my opinion, Colin Baker was the best Dr. who.

Being a huge movie buff and having some available on a wish list I only got 2 dvd's for xmas - "Office Space" and "Spider-Man 2". I am unloved :-(

I put so much thought into giving gifts, like a twisted humor book for my brother or the perfect dvd's for dad. Then I have to wonder when they give me a box of cookies, do these people realy know me at all??

Hmm it truly is a sad tale Susan...

Personally I think it was a fine year.  I bought some of these with my own money, but I bought them recently so I'm slotting them in the list:

Return of the King Extended [now the trilogy is finally complete!!]
Ghost in the Shell the Graphic novel [fantastic stuff]
Obi Wan Kenobi figurine [I have a Buddy Christ and the tank from ghost in the shell on my dash, and am amassing a collection of movie collectibles on it.  Currently the buddy christ is holding the lightsaber, just so people can realise I'm not crazy-religious]
Matrix Ultimate Collection and the Star Wars trilogy [Two more trilogies finally in my possession!]
Spaceballs [I bought this with the Star wars box set and didn't realise the irony until i got home]
and various other bits and pieces of which no importance shall be made.
