I really liked "Spirited Away".  I don't know if it's your style or not, but I found it extremely inventive, fun, disturbing at times, and creative.

In SF anime, there is Cowboy Bebop (movie and series) and if you can stand the cute Disney-like character design, Metropolis is very good.

If you like poetic visions, anything by Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, Mononoke Hime, My Neighbour Totoro). With the exception of Mononoke Hime, these are primarily aimed at children, so they are quite cute.

For a modern psycho triller, there is Perfect Blue by Kon Satochi

I don't know the English title, it should be something like 'Grave of the fireflies' by Takahata, it is very touching. It is about two kids who get orphaned by the bombings at the end of WW2 and eventually die of starvation. Bleak but beautiful.

Also 'Memories', really a collage of three shorts, with the hilarious 'Stink Bomb' in the middle. It is about a salaryman who unwittingly transforms himself into a major biohazard.

Master Blaster

The above suggestions are great flicks. If your in the mood for some good Japanese Anime that's a little off the beaten path check out Jin-Ra. It's a thriller set in an alternative modern Japan. It's very original and the animation is outstanding.

BeyondTheGrave

Oh yeah foregot about that one Master Blaster. Buts its called "Jin-Roh" here in America unless you used the Japanese saying of it I am not sure. I am not trying to be wiseass or anything just wanted to know if it called Jin-Ra in Japan.

Oh, and Jin-Ra...but be prepared for a heartbreaking end.

This was my list from an Anime thread that came up some time ago:

Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Nausicaa (not out on Region 1 DVD yet)
Castle in the Sky
The Castle of Cagliostro
Kiki's Delivery Service
My Neighbor Totoro

Grave of the Fireflies

The original Macross movie (usually called "Clash of the Bionoids")
Metropolis

Also cool and worth seeing:

Perfect Blue

Battle Angel
Lupin the 3rd - series, "Castle of Cagliostro" was pretty much the movie version
Gunbuster, episode #6
Ninja Scroll
Neon Genesis Evangelion - a big series
Bubblegum Crisis - always liked the orginal series, especially #5

If you want to be a purist, learn Japanese and listen to the original dialog.  Both subs and dubs fall short, for different reasons

I would be carefu l about "Blood: The Last Vampire" .  The animation is truly great but since it's part 2 of a never finished 3 part series, the story is a bit...incomplete and can be rather disjointing and would hate this to be one of the first experiences someone had with anime.

Catroon Network is playing a good selection these days.  I'm getting more into "Full Metal Alchemist" and "Inuyasha" and "Big O" seem cool.  "Wolfe Rain" or whatever seems well done but I'm having a hard time getting into the plot (seems to be a bit slow and 'talky').  Of course "Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex" is good, especially if you liked the movie(s), and the one with the witches/craft looks good too, but again I've not gotten into it yet

Good way to get a taste over a week or so if you want .

I did not know this Freep I have the anime and read the one shot Manga but didn't know it was supposed to be three parts.

Freep. Okey, i'll give ya that....but i'm an old man, grasshopper, and i gotta go within my limets. I do see your point though. What animes have the closest match between actual voice work and subbs?
And G in the S :SAC is great. Do these stories take place before or after the movies?

I would guess after because the Major seems pretty weel adjusted to her reality

What animes have the closest match between actual voice work and subbs?

Dunno.  I've just noticed a few things

1) Some long monologues in dubs with nowhere near as much text in subs
2) Seem some spanish moves with subs (I now *enough* spanish to realize the subs were only approximations)
3) I think I've seen some english movies dubbed into spanish and then re-subtitled.

Sort of learning the original language, I think anything's going to be a compromise.  I will do both subs and dubs and each has strengths and each has weakness and I don't think either is really a 'purist' approach

BeyondTheGrave

I agree with you thier Freep. It's crazy to see people talk about "purity",That dubs are the wrong way to watch anime. My answer always to that is do you understand Japanese to say that dubs are wrong? For all someone knows the Japanese version could be saying your a moron for buying this anime. Most of the time I watch both the sub and the dub because like you said they have both strengths and weakness. I do have to say though dubs have come all long way for anime.

Oh and one more thing Ghost in the shell stand alone complex  does not take place with the movies timeline. It completely separate from the movies. Hence Stand Alone Complex.
