When I was reading someones post, I saw Scott said that Evil Dead is a requirement and it sparked this topic. What b-movies do you feel are requirements for viewing or feel that give a broad sense of what b-movies are all about. I am pretty brain dead right now so I can't think of any but when I do I will post.

Vermin Boy

Plan 9, definitely-- easily the greatest example of 50s cheese.

Mr Hockstatter

Something with the Scream Queens in it, Brinke Stevens, Michelle Bauer or Linnea Quigley.

And something directed by Jim Wynorski, like Chopping Mall, Deathstalker II or Sorority House Massacre II.

Find the original 1980 book by the Medved brothers, entitled The Golden Turkey Awards.  They hit all the high points.
But to be redundant . . .
Vermin has succinctly hit the Golden Standard for B-movies:  Ed Wood's Plan 9.  Really, if you haven't seen that one at least several times, then you have no real basis of comparison to other films.  It is the bellwether, the Eminence Grise, of the genre.
After that, see Phil Tucker's Robot Monster and then They Saved Hitler's Brain.  These 3 films together really condense everything that is wrong about B-films -- and why we love them!
After that, feel free to see Invisible Invaders, The Beginning of the End . . . etc. etc.

I reckon that Carnosaur should be included.

There's no doubt a lot of the mentioned movies are unintentionally hilarious, but try a few intended comedies. The original cut of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes comes to mind. It cracked the door open for movies like Airplane and Top Secret. Try to watch it when you are in the mood for a goofy laugh. The opening song alone is funnier than 90% of any recent comedies.

It might be hard to find the original cut, but it was re-released with some added scenes of a projectionist watching the movie. Some like it, some don't. This version was also packaged with a packet of Killer Tomato seeds. Genetic engineering run amuck is always funny.

Scott

There are many films that could be considered B-movie fan requirements. PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE and ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES were I believe part of that early 80's golden turkey awards.

You might want to start with genres and subgenres, but Ed Wood films and Roger Corman films are a good place to start. There are 100's a fine canidates that may be considered required viewing. I will just put a few they are commonly referred to on this messageboard over the years. They aren't all my favorites, but they are common topics here:

Plan 9 From Outer Space
Dead Alive
Zombie
Re-Animator films
Godzilla
Evil Dead (all three)
George Romero Films
Roger Corman Films
Ed Wood films
Bad Taste
Hammer Films

Crazy gore films and old 50's Sci-Fi/Horror seem to be favorites.

You might get brain freeze trying to pick some. There is no way to put them in order, but some of my favorites are:

The Green Slime
Spider Baby
Zombie
Tombs of the Blind Dead
Shiver of a Vampire
Blood Sucking Freaks
Project Moonbase
Missle to the Moon
Wild Angels
Psychomania
Motel Hell
Night of the Living Dead
Giant of the Unknown
The Crawling Eye
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Mad Max
Psycho (not a b-movie)
Django

Glad to see you listed Psychomania. It is vastly underappreciated. It's goofy and bad and has dead bikers literally riding their bikes out of the graves. Why can't hollywood come up with stuff like this? Well, I guess we know why.

Question for moderators: I have been getting an email message delivery failure back from badmovies.org. I am using hotmail. First I get a "delay" notification and then get a "failure" due to mail server notice.

Also, I haven't gotten a message board registration request back in many days. Is that possibly related or does registration usually take time?

Mr Hockstatter

Yeah, I tried to register too but it never sent me a password.  Then I requested a new password a couple of times and never got any response.

Brother Ragnarok

I don't know if the mods can do anything about this.  Leastways, I can't because I'm computer retarded.  Andrew is probably the only one who can control that kind of thing.

There are only two important things in life - monsters and hot chicks.
    - Rob Zombie
Rape is just cause for murdering.
    - Strapping Young Lad

Scott

Yea, I think Andrew handles all of that and I haven't seen him on the board in a couple weeks. I'll try to E-Mail him.

Mr Hockstatter

It's certainly no big deal as far as I'm concerned.  No need to bother him over in Iraq for such a trivial thing.

Scott

Well, I had my E-mail returned also. Must be something on his end. He'll be back.

Menard

Please let us know when you do hear something from him.
