Okay, here's my sketchy description. I can remember watching this movie on Channel 5 here in the NY/NJ area when they had the Saturday afternoon 'Kung Fu Theater". It was when I was 6 or 7, so it couldn't be made after 1981. It had all the hallmarks of the usual kung fu movie, "you killed my teacher, now I must go through a lengthy training sequence and then avenge his death". It was the method of training that sticks in my head. The student would train on a lifesize human dummy made out of wood, and the dummy contained little stainless steel balls with Chinese writing on them. The student would hit the dummy and make the little balls travel through little paths in the dummy and eventually fall out the bottom. I know this is pretty vague, but if this sounds familiar to anyone, please let me know.

Try Shaolin Wooden Men. If you're thinking it's an old Jackie Chan flick, then this might be it. It was made in 1976. That's a preeeetty interesting fighting technique though. I'd like to hear more about it very much.

I can't help you with the movie title, but it is definitely not Shaolin Wooden Men.  While there were a number of good wooden dummy sequences, but not involving what sounds like a death-touch technique.
