I know lot of people on the board are familar with anime and this is a feature film anime thats going to have a limited run in the theathers. It based on the manga (comic book) of the same name. This uses a "Cel shadeing"(people who play video games should be familiar with that term) with CGI for in animation.(Its NOT like final fantasty sprirts within CGI the movie still has a cartoon feel).

The plot goes in the future the rest on the world is destroyed by a war. The last bastion of humanity is in a city called "Olympus". The thing is the city is run by test tube beings called "bioroids". They don't have human emotions so they govern make up the half of the population with the humans. The thing is the military doesn't want to be tools to these bioroids and went them destroyed. Enter Deunan. A bad ass solider girl who is recurited not only to fight them but holds a secret of the bioroids. but the bioroids that govner the city are not all that good either........

Overall the movie was pretty good. Their are some scences that have alittle too much tech-babble and some real cornball romantic dialogue between Deunan and her now fully robotic ex-lover that had me rolling my eyes and laughing. Even if your not a fan of anime sci-fi nuts should get a kick out of the robot (Mech) designs and future storyline (even though it gets kind of plot heavy).

one final note thiers also other Applseed movie that came out in the early 90s (which I have) and has the same basic setting, plot and charathers (of course animation is different hand drawn) and ditchs the love story some of the tech babble so I would suggest to see the old one first to get a feel.

I bet it won't be good as the orignal Appleseed and  be a disapointment.

BeyondTheGrave

Definently sounds interesting.  I'm sure I'll have to wait until it's DVD release before I'll get a chance to see it.

I really need to start reading more Manga.  Battle Royale and Oldboy are about the extent of my "adventures in manga"

I bought Appleseed on Amazon and received it in the mail yesterday. I have yet to watch it. But after searching out and reading this post, I'm a little disappointed to hear that it's a remake. I suppose that's to be expected these days, though, when EVERYTHING is a remake.

Hey, all - I used to post here a while (a few years ago, that is) under the name "Grumpy Guy."  Finally I have time to hang out again, so here I am!

Back on topic...

Actually, for those of you who are complaining about how the original anime was better, I'm guessing that you never read the manga.  The new version comes a whole hell of a lot closer to the sorce material, which I thought was some of the best manga I had ever read - up there with Ghost in the Shell (same author, and I'm NOT talking about that empty, soulless, but undenyably pretty anime movie releaced in 1995 (97 in the States), Gunsmith Cats, Urusei Yatsura, and Battle Angel Alita.

Yes, the new Appleseed is essentially a "remake" in that it goes over the same basic plot as the 1988 direct to video releace.  I prefer to think of it as the first real attempt at adapting the original material to the screen to tell a story instead of turn a quick buck.

All that said, the new Appleseed still falls short of the manga; it just comes a hell of a lot closer than the craptastic '88 OAV releace.

Damn, get me goin' on 80's and 90's anime and manga and I'll apparently talk your ears off...

Speaking of Battle Angel Alita, I sure wish I could get that on DVD (for a reasonable price from an actual store, instead of resorting to buying a high priced import or bootleg). I'd like to throw my old VHS copy away. It's one of the few VHS tapes I have left. Maybe when the new James Cameron movie comes out the anime will make it's way back to the stores in a nice, official "special edition" remastered DVD package. That movie was always my favorite anime flick, and the books were great, too.

Cameron is doing a Gunmu movie????????  >franticly checks IMDB for information>

Oh, HELL yes.  Here's hoping they do it right!  Did I read right, though, that he's planning on doing it in some new kind of 3-D?

Yeah. I have some reserves on that bit of news (the 3-D thing). I hope it doesn't screw up the movie in any way. But he has some great material to work with, and he'll have to go way out of his way to screw it up.

Wow....I only saw the early 90's anime for "Battle Angel", I really liked it.  I didn't realize there was a live action version...or that another one was being made.

I'm current;y reading the Manga for "Battle Angel Alita" as I can (read through #4) and  I'm impressed.  I think the aime did a good job of capturing the essence of the internal conflicts, but the mange is a ot more detailed.

BeyondTheGrave

I read the manga of Appleseed and well I still like the original Appleseed anime better. Don't get me wrong I thought this version is closer to the source and still good but I still like the old one.

As for Battle Angel I read some of the manga and have the anime and I really like it. I too love the early anime from 80 early 90s. Dirty Pair, Angel Cop, Bubblegum Crisis are some of my favorites. Now anime/manga due to being so mainstearm is pretty shallow. The market is so flooded with anime/manga you have to really look hard to find some decent stuff.

Yeah, Mainstream Anime.  Blech.  You know what really p**ses me off?  Bubble Gum Crisis Tokyo 2040.  For the love of God, leave the classics alone.  Bubblegum Crisis was, IMHO, one of the greatest, if not the greatest, OVAs ever.  While the weird technological singularity ending of 2040 was not without merit, 2040 was never anything but a pale immitation of the original; much like Dirty Pair Flash, Burn Up W, and almost every other new series based on some old series, movie, or OVA.

I keep expecting to see Space Cruiser Yamato Flash or some such.
