Seen "The descent" (2005), and liked it.

I remember renting "Dog Soldiers" about a year and a half ago, not knowing what exactly what to expect. What I finally got was a nice, over the top saturday night movie mixing british soldiers, creative scenarios, werewolves and, unfortunatelly, lots of cheese. Don't take me wrong, it is a great saturday night movie, but somehow I felt that the use of scenarios and Neil Masrhall's nifty camerawork would have deserved a more serious movie to be in.

Which takes me to "The Descent", his second horror effort. It starts quite blandly, with a group of female friends that meet every year to practice adventure sports, such as climbing, diving, etc. However, soon Marshall has his hands on our necks, as something happens and we are fast-forwarded to next year's meeting, a trip to the USA and to a gloomy cave.

Here thereal movie starts. Marshall remembers how effective his use of natural landscapes was in his previous effort and takes it a couple of steps forward, the women start showing they're not as close as they expected, and soon they find themselves traped way down.

I won't say anymore. If you've seen the trailers or read about the film elsewhere, you'll know that there's much more to explain, but I won't go into it, as i think this is one of those films that work better on a fresh audience. Let's say that despite the bland prologue and the occasional bad dialogue, Marshall's film manages to be genuinely terrifying and claustrophobic, Marshall himself proving he is a name that should be kept in mind when we speak of hooror directors in the next years. Enough said.

I was reading some reviews of "The Cave", and most of them mentioned how inferior it was to The Descent.  So I read some reviews of Descent and they all sounded excellent.  I'll have to pick this up sometime soon.
