During World War I, a pigeon named Cher Ami was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for carrying an urgent message to American headquarters despite being clipped by two German bullets.  The message was for American artillery to cease fire immediately, because their shells were landing on the 308th Battalion instead of on the Germans attacking them. Cher Ami's heroic delivery saved dozens of lives.
