From what I can remember this movie was a comedy about two medical students who discover a zombie making chemical. One dose of the chemical turned people into zombies and the second made them human again. At the end they're sitting around eating lunch with one of the zombies and he asks them how long the antidote lasts before turning and attacking them.

I thought this one might have been a reanimator movie but can't find it on imdb.

I come up with two possibles, though I have not seen the end of them.  Indeed, I have only seen a part of one and know of the other by reputation.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

That could be it, but in that movie they dont discover a potion, they bring Bud back to life with electricity in the bathtub. That movie is pretty bad, great to laugh at.

No not that one either. I'm going to have to track chud 2 though. According to the imdb page it was meant to be a return of the living dead movie.

Andrew

I have two slim possibles for this now.  The first involves surfers.

Surf II

Brain Blockers

definetly isnt re-animator or chud 2 , although i dont know what it could be off the top of my head.

Cheers for reviving this thread Andrew.

Definitely not Brain Blockers because I saw this movie like 15 years ago. IMDB says Brain Blockers was made in 2004.

I suspect it isn't Surf II either. The chemical was something that the two main characters discovered.

I think my previous description was incorrect. There were two chemicals, one that brought dead people back to life as zombies and another that could be given to the zombies to make them human. The second chemical was discovered towards the end of the film and the main characters became rich from it. The twist at the end was that the second chemical wears offs after a while.

I'm pretty sure I saw this movie too or in part but I can't remember what movie it was either. Most likely I saw it on Scream (Canada's Horror/Thriller channel).  Actually thought it was one of the Re-Animator films....but I'm not at all certain.  It may just have aired along with those.

It wouldn't be Return of the Living Dead would it? It sounds like it might be the first movie which is 1985 - here's the IMDB entry on it:

No it's definitely not. There was no chemical "discovered" either for creating or returning to normal, the zombies. There was a chemical released, but it was by the mortuary workers not some sort of students.

It's vaguely possible that it might be RotLD part III, since that does feature an "inteligent" zombie that retain's it's humanity (well mostly), but it doesn't contain a scene even vaguely resembling the key scene the OP mentions and has no chemical that "restores" humanity.

Well it won't be part three then either, I happened to watch that a couple of nights ago.

Just found this web site and it seems pretty exhaustive (though it includes a lot of movies that seem to be somewhat questionable as zombie films), but there are a LOT of movies listed. Descriptions also seem to be on the short side, which won't help, but it might at least be a good reference point. I'll try working my way through it, but if someone wants to help out that would be good.

Link to the 1999 end of the list

I'm working my way backwards from the 1999 end of things. I've found a possible match called "Dead is Dead"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0228191/

It references two drugs one of which heals and the other which turns the person into a zombie. It's so far the only movie that I've managed to find which does reference two drugs. There is also a sequel called <SHOCK> "Dead is Dead 2 : Incarnation". The synopsis for the second movie does mention something about "before the drug destroys them both?", so it's possible that there is a "wearing off" effect as mentioned by the OP.
