Actually, the University of Hawaii in Honolulu and National Research Institute of Police in Tokyo in 1999 did a joint study of pornography and rape in Japan. They didn't give the statistics for rape for the years studied, only whether the number and type of rapes had increased or decreased over the time period studied.

Course, I dunno, read in different sources that the Japanese government tends to hush up a lot of the country's real crime statistics.  Officially, for instance, there is NO underage sex ever occuring in Japan (and even with the Age of Consent in Japan being 13, I don't buy it.)

Was Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend the 1st Hentai?  Or was there some that predated that?

I know that was the 1st hentai that I ever was subjected to.  At least it had an interesting plot to go along with the craziness.

The only other hentai I've seen is a couple of the La Blue Girls animated DVD's.

I've got a friend of mine who is all into that stuff.  Kind of disturbing actually.............

"Legend of the Overfiend" was the first I ever encountered.  The copy I first owned was entirely in Japanese, so I had no clue what was being said.  And, yes, I realized that not knowing what was being said DID matter.  The IMDB lists "Wicked City" as 1987 and "Overfiend" as (1989), but the first "Overfiend" is one of the few hentai's that I can actually watch and appreciate, because it was more than just shoving tentacles (or whatever) into japanimation babes.

Years ago when Blockbuster carried only VHS tapes I noticed in the animation section a whole group of cartoon tapes with the little youth restricted viewing decal, couldn't understand why a cartoon would have such a label.
I mentioned it to my daughter during a discussion of movie ratings and was surprised to learn from her that they deserved the label, she wouldn't say why, just that they did, so of course I had to rent one and see for myself. I can't remember the title but the story involved two high school girls who were being stalked by some demon lord or some thing along those lines, watched about half the movie and what I saw was about on a par with PG-13.
Then the demon character, disguised as a student goes to the home of a teacher, she has just come out of the shower or is getting ready to go in, only wearing a robe, I know because at this point the student changes into some sort of monster with several dozen tentacles which he uses to remove the robe and then rape the woman with, at this point I turned the VCR off. I've since come to understand from some Japanese friends that this sort of thing is fairly common in Japan but is not considered fit for children, only for adults. All I can say is that there is obviously a real big difference in our two cultures

Yeah Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend was the first one I saw also, I was dared into watching it by one of the co-owners of the comic/anime/gamer shop I used to go to. Knowing that in terms of story and animation this was one of the better ones didn't make me a fan of the genre. One of those rare films that made me feel the need to take a shower after. Glad I never saw the other volumes.

I've seen a few others since or regular anime with one or two hentai-type scenes, mostly milder than regular hentai, Bio-Hunter jumps to mind right off. Ick.

I can laugh at milder stuff like Golden Boy because there are some frat-humor style laughs in stuff like that, but still not something I'd watch on a regular basis.

I read some of the reviews of "dating games" that Something Awful used to carry. There's not well adjusted people making or playing those things.
