Not necessarily a movie but a show that was on in mid to late 90s.  Brief description;

A person (Michael Caine comes to mind but I'm not 100% sure) goes back in time to observe some infamous people (Hitler, Jack The Ripper).  It wasn't exactly a drama like say Quantem Leap but rather a serious show about these historical figures.  I recall in the Hitler episode the guy going back to Hitler's painting days and a woman asking over a communication device about what does the guy see in Hitler's eyes.  The guy replies with "anger".  Not sure what cable channel it was on.

It doesn't sound like an exact match, since it takes place during WWII and not before, but it is a British TV series and was from the early 90's.

checked out the link, I don't think it was that show.  The one I'm thinking of is more or less like a documentary show with a twist.  Thanks for looking though.

The one I know of that was more drama (maybe adventure) was "Voyagers," but that was much too old.

Could this be from the Timecop TV series?  I remember it being not as much action and punching as the movie.

Michael Caine was in the TV movie of "Jack the Ripper", are you sure you're not mixing this up with the one you're looking for?

I could very well be mixing that up.  Something tells me it was a very short run show.  I don't recall seeing many episodes.

Yeah man, Voyagers was back around 1980 or so. I used to watch it a lot.  I also remember the controversy when Jon Eric Hexum (the star of the show) accidentally killed himself when he pointed a blank .357 revolver at his had and pulled the trigger. The force of the wadding fractured and penetrated his skull.

Voyagers wasn't a bad show, but I was always partial to Irwin Allen's The Time Tunnel.

This sounds like the "you are there" series that was on american TV in the 50s hosted by Walter Cronkite, they ran went to a historical event and played it like a news teams there covering it, for example for Paul Reveres  Ride, they would interview actors pretending British and american soldier, Reveres family etc.  I think this was revived under other names several times, there was aversion on Canadian TV in the 1970s with similar format, Called witness to yesterday.
