Foreign Affairs - Tom Waits (1977)

Waits was going for a jazzy/bluesy film noir feel for this one, hence the album cover. Essentially, he was covering familiar ground travelled on Nighthawks at the Diner and Small Change, but perhaps trying to apply a theme or concept. Some numbers are highly reminiscent of material from the two previous albums mentioned, ala "The One That Got Away" from Small Change. I get a similar vibe on this as I do with Heartattack and Vine, like Tom was still inspired, but maybe starting to get bored, before the spark that would ignite his avant garde work of the 80's.

Solid, perfectly acceptable Waits stuff, if not among my favorites.

Amazing album. Irish/Celtic musos consider this one of the legendary recordings of the 70's revival of Irish folk and traditional music. It combines the playing abilities of the legendary bouzouki/mandolin player Andy Irvine with the haunting vocals of Paul Brady. It is the only studio recording to have come from this coupling. If you like Irish music but don't want to wade through loads of fiddly-dee music (I happen to like the fiddly-dee stuff myself) or cheesy filler Irish ballads to get to quality, heart-felt singing and playing, this album is chock full of it.

If it's true what they say, that GOD created us in His image, then why should we not love creating, and why should we not continue to do so, as carefully and ethically as we can, on whatever scale we're capable of?

The choice is simple; refuse to create, and refuse to grow, or build, with care and love.
