A few nights ago I saw this movie and I've got to say that I was actually pretty entertained. I mean, yeah, it was an absolutely awful movie, but it did a pretty good job capturing the essense, the anima as it were, of the slasher film. Unlike most contempary slasher movies, which are way too dark for their own good (there's only one Halloween, I'm looking at you See No Evil) and really miss out on the fun of the slasher flick. This one didn't. Perhaps it had a bit too much fun, bordering insipid, but it was a sight better than most of the recent lame attempts at ressurecting the slasher movie. The slasher in this case is Horny the Clown the demonic mascot of Hella Burger, a fictional fast food chain. He's no Jason or Freddy (whom Horny has a lot in common with via the plot rip-off) and his get-up is an exercise in streamlined gothic ridiculousness. He may not break the mold, but he fits into it quite nicely. I don't know, I liked him.
*Oh, and just for the record. Though my avatar, until recently, has been a skull clown I am not a big clown guy. I tend to stray away from clowns, especially evil ones, because it ultimately leads to ICP whom I detest. I am, however, intrigued by John Wayne Gacy (artist of my skull clown avatar) and it fit perfectly with my forum pseudonym borrowed from my favorite Poe tale. Other clowns I do like are the Joker, Homey D. Clown, Violator, Doink the Clown, Yucko the Clown, Pennywise, Sweet Tooth, Mad Clown, and that crazy, choke happy clown doll from Alone in the Dark 2.*
Looking this movie up, I found that the biggest complaint is the acting. Obviously the people writing such reviews have terribly high standards for bad cinema. Such a sin. I wish there was a way to teach people how to enjoy bad acting. For a bunch of 20 somethings in a goofy horror movie, I think they did alright. The worst acting came via a cameo from Super Size Me's Morgan Spurlock, and even his one note had some merit.
I'll recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys a serving of teenagers getting hacked up by a deranged lunatic from beyond the grave with a few cheap laughs on the side.
Favorite part: A girl is chained to a chair with her head in a microwave (which is also chained to her). Main character Mackenzie can only helplessly watch as her friend's head pops like so many potatos. Also, the fictional Hella Burger commercials are priceless.
Favorite line: "I grew up with that goofy bastard. It's like finding out Captain Kangaroo's got pieces of Mr. Green Genes in his fridge."
