A bald man named Savalas visited me last night in a dream.  I think it was a Telly vision.

The French Connection. (was it 1 or 2 that had the car chase?)

I really need to see DeathRace2000. I can already sense how 'bad' it is.

Doesn't take place in the 70's, but the car chase in Bullitt (1968) is one of the greatest if not the greatest in movie history, all 9 minutes and 42 seconds of it.  Steve McQueen is driving a 1968 390 Mustang  vs  the bad guys in a 1968 440 magnum equipped Charger.

Another good one  not mentioned here is the chase in The Seven Ups

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

That would be the first one...and I agree! Thats a great race!

DEATHRACE 2000 was directed by Paul (EATING RAOUL) Bartel, and it's surprisingly good! A classic of it's kind. Not a dull moment. And with David Carridine,Mary (Miss Tovar!) Wornov,Slyvester Stallane as Machine Gun Joe,and a slew of AIP regulars...you can't go wrong!

Deathrace 2000 is tons of fun, but I don't know if I'd qualify it as one of the better car chase movies.  The cars are all modified Volkswagens and the high speed scenes are sped-up footage.  Don't get me wrong, it's great and Carradine is fantastic as Frankenstein.  It's a favorite of mine.  I love Corman productions.

However, I'm with Skaboi on this one.  Vanishing Point is a strong contender for best car chase movie ever.  The entire runtime is this huge hippie existentialist exercise behind the wheel of a Dodge Challenger.  It has an incredible soundtrack, too.  I can't help but get all pumped when I hear Mississippi Queen.

My favorite of all time, though, is the original Gone in 60 Seconds.  It's a real cheap excuse for a smash up derby and takes a little while to get to the good stuff, but the final 40 minutes is an extremely exciting car chase where 93 cars are destroyed in spectacular fashion.   Halicki did all the driving himself and managed to injure himself badly in the name of a couple of crazy awesome stunt scenes (he would later be killed during the filming of yet another stunt gone wrong).  The man was dedicated to shooting a kick ass car chase and it shows.

I kinda liked "Duel", which was both a car -chase flick, AND, a reverse-car-chase flick (Reverse being someone NOT letting someone go around them, intentionally slowing them down).
Raw bacon is GREAT! It's like regular bacon, only faster, and it doesn't burn the roof of your mouth!

It's not too surprising there is a web database for all things Movie Car Chase related:

http://www.varaces.com/

They rate the car chases in everything from BULLIT to THE BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS.

Sign up and you can rate the car chases in THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM and SUNSET BOULEVARD.

Would you guys think that TWO LANE BLACKTOP would count as a race? Or just a road movie?
