OK, I watched this one this weekend but I've been too busy to post about it till now.  I enjoyed this one OK, I mean, the MACHETE trailer was a fun way to start, and the movie itself was nice and fast paced . . . but I found it far inferior to DEATH PROOF.  I guess, whereas DEATH PROOF had at least a semi-plausible plot that made the characters more sympathetic and the villain more nasty, this one was so over-the-top ridiculous I just couldn't get into it.  Nonetheless, it was worth the rental fee, I guess.  That being said . . .

Rose McGowan is better looking with one leg than most women are with two!
Bruce Willis looks pretty awesome with thermonuclear acne!
And what the heck was up with the little boy bringing his turtle and tarantulas when his mom is trying to save him from a zombie invasion??
And how did somebody as homely as MACHETE wind up in a menage a trois with two such hot women?
And how strong is Rose's libido that she wanted to do the deed with one leg recently lopped off AND zombies closing in on the barbecue joint they were hiding in?

Last of all . . .

the Missing Reel trick was annoying!

Robert Rodriguez was trying way too hard with this one.  He pretty much made a satire of what he thought is an exploitation movie while Quentin went and actually made an exploitation film (lots of critics have echoed this same sentiment).

Planet Terror is fun for the 1st viewing but it grows kind of boring when each subsequent viewing.

And yes, Rose McGowan couldn't be hotter in this though I would take Marley Shelton anyday over Rose.   :tongueout:

I didn't buy Death Proof as an actual exploitation film at all (all that dialogue between the women ruins any chance of that).  Planet Terror either, for that matter, but I found it overall more entertaining, so I did like it more.

I like both though.

Rose McGowan with a machine gun leg is the best idea in cinematography since King Kong.

I enjoyed this movie a lot, saw it in a movie theatre and laughed through the whole movie, especially when (spoiler warning!!!!!) the little kid is left in the car and his mom gives him a gun and the little bugger shoots himself (end of spoiler)
Yes, I am pretty twisted. :tongueout:
Anyhoo, this is a great movie if you aren't expecting to see a serious flick, if you just want to spend the evening watching disgusting zombies killing people and getting killed by people, a truly beautiful leading lady kicking ass (with one leg) and some ear twisting, mind popping, bowel squelching action, this movie is for you!
Oh, IMO, the missing reel trick was brilliant  :twirl:

Neville

Potato king, you surely can't be as twisted as Robert Rodriguez, who cast one of his kids as the one that kicks the buckett in that scene.

I found the movie silly but rather enjoyable. i think the best part is actually the build-up, with the scenes at the creepy hospital and the nods to Romero and Carpenter. After that it gets too loud and silly at the same time, although I laughed here and there, such as with the "missing reel" gag or the one-legged stripper shooting all the bad guys.

Despite this, the weaker of the two movies, can't argue with that.
Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

I haven't seen Death Proof yet but I did enjoy this one.  It was campy, ridiculous, and loads of fun to watch.  I loved the subplot between the two married doctors.

I thought the best scene between them is when Josh Brolin's character is stabbing Marley Shelton in the hands with the needles in attempt to get her to drop her cell phone thing.  Just plain vicious and funny at the same time.

I saw both films at the second run theater, figured it would add to the "grindhouse" effect for real wear and tear on the film in addition to the fake stuff.

I liked PT and thought the build up was near perfect in evolking the mood of the kind of films it was paying tribute to. Less so when the action got going, since it felt less like a horror/zombie/gore movie and more like a straightforward action flick. It seems like in a real exploitation flick, more of the heroes would have died, and in messy ways. What's the point of a large cast supporting characters other than as zombie chow, that's one of the things Slither got right.

Characters die in messy and sudden ways in films like this for no reason other than to pad the body count or to jolt us with action again. The sudden death of Naveen Andrews' character was not entirely unexpected, since he was partly responsible for setting things in motion, like some kind of narrative moral compass was in effect.

The movie redeems itself a bit at the end, but not enough to suit me. Plus Tarantino should not be allowed to act in anyone's movies, he's an annoying distraction, and wasn't meancing or sleazy like his character was meant to be, just an overacting goofball who took me out of the film in all his scenes. Willis played his part just right for this kind of stuff.

And why be forced to choose, I'll take Rose (one or two legs, I even liked her character in Death Proof more than any of the female characters QT browbeat us with) AND Marley.

BTW Josh Brolin plays jaded sleazeball villains pretty well, hope he gets to do that in more films, I enjoyed his scenes, and I usually don't even notice when he's even in a film.

I have both Death Proof and Planet Terror but I've only had time to watch Planet Terror, it was a good effort but over done IMHO. As others have said he tired to hard to make a grndhouse film. It was fun but I doubt it will make the the keeper collection.

Planet Terror wa the most AMAZING thing Ive ever seen in theaters. I loved that it was so over the top, because thats what makes it so funny! Horror-comedies (or as I like to call them, horromedies) are the BEST, man! But allot of people dont seem to understand them, which is a shame. But no matter how much I love Grindhouse, I refuse to buy it until they release the whole movie onto one disc. None of this "you have to buy death proof and plannet terror seperatley" crap. PLUS, I hear that the the only trailer in the dvds is Machette! WHATS UP WITH THAT?!

Meh.  I really enjoyed Planet Terror, don't get me wrong.  It was just way too over the top and way too expensive for it to even be considered an exploitation flick.  Death Proof feels exactly like the type of film you would have seen in a grindhouse.  Planet Terror just seemed like Rodriguez made a big budgeted zombie film but with some digital grain added in.

I enjoyed it like I said but it missed the point of a GRINDHOUSE FILM.  Tarantino's film on the other hand hit all of the right chords for me and was the better film in my opinion.

Yeah this movie had it's good and bad points - just like "Death Proof" but overall they both achieved IMO what they sought out to.  I think planet terror was a little over the top in some aspects.

I thought the facial puss popping was a bit much - lots of...well...LOTS of gross out scenes. There was a lot of good humor, like the bbq guy laying on the floor disemboweled..but..not really..LOL

I loved how the guy shoves a wooden plank on the girls leg and she's pegging around. Then later he sticks a gun on there. There's no logic behind how she can actually shoot the gun without using her fingers, it's just good fun.

Mr. DS

I have yet to seen Death Proof so I can't compare but I really did like Planet Terror.  Granted, I felt it could have done without the sadistic doctor angle which made no sense.  Its pretty much a mindless adventure which honestly isn't always a bad thing.

The biggest issue that I have with Robert  Rodriguez is that he hasn't grown at all as a filmmaker the entire time he's been making films.

Quentin has only made about a 1/3 of the movies that Robert has but yet Quentin has managed to show some kind of significant growth in each of his films in some area.

People always shout about how great Sin City was, but that was becauase of Frank Miller and not Robert.
