Maybe we can ally with them, and release them on the squirrels?  We'll have to make armor for them first, though.

They are on the island of Papua? Brings two thoughts to mind, each disturbing in its own right:
IF these rats are the result of 'endemic dwarfing' (as are many newly-discovered island-living species) they would have started out much bigger.  Somewhere.
Or...their large size may imply simply that the rats are the top of the local food chain.  Marching into camp unafraid eh? Hmmm.
