I wonder if streaming video has affected user reviews. It seems like more netflix reviewers aren't watching the entire movie.

I thought Netflix reviewers only reviewed movies that weren't streaming. Every review I see is full of hundreds of comments saying "put this on streaming Netflix or I'm cancelling!!!!1!"

We just found out today that a mod at another forum I frequent died 08/30 sudden and unexpected. He was only 45 years old. So weird because he was still active posting the day before.

rev- when they took names off the reviews the quality and usefulness went rapidly downhill. What a weird decision that was

I got together today with a good friend whom I haven't seen for a very long time.  We talked and laughed and really had a great time.  We both promised that we would get together again soon. For the life of me, I don't know why we're both such procrastinators?

Anybody know where I can find some faux scripts for voice over demos?

I can't feel my prognostication. It's gone all numb, except where it tingles.

The true root core of socialism is control of all resources by everyone including the working class. The problem seems to be, and has always been implementing it. For often with power, those put in charge instead create a state-run secretly capitalist society to benefit those in power....

There is no effective way for the mass of citizens to effectively control national resources.  There will always need to be someone put in charge, and human nature being what it is, that someone will almost always take advantage of the situation to increase their own power or wealth.
Democracy is no better, since the great mass of people are idiots who will vote for whoever promises them the most free stuff paid for by other people's money.  Eventually the working class cannot afford the taxes required for government to play Santa Claus, and the whole system crashes.  Hence John Adams' quote: "There was never a democracy yet that did not die by suicide."

It just bugs me that socialism, which is pretty much control of all resources by the working people, is so misunderstood and often lumped in with nationalism and fascism which has used its name in the past to spread their own influence. I don't consider many of the Soviet leaders to be true socialists. I agree it is impossible in reality because it relies upon a level of co-operation arguably impossible to achieve in reality where the people who work for an organization also run it....and work with workers in other organizations to decide everything (actually the closest we get is a co-operative which sometimes does work IMO)...everybody working together for the benefit of all, not just the benefit of those in power...that's the ideal...in reality, power corrupts it just as it does everything else.

Along the same lines, so not so random I suppose: I well remember the day one of our profs at university told us he was a Marxist.  In the next breath he said that even Marx admitted it would never work, given human nature.  (Yes I know the difference between Socialism and Communism)

It's easy to bash socialism for obvious reasons, but I think the problem is it doesn't have an Industrial Revolution type aspect where just tons of wealth is created, however unfairly. Some of it is traceable to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_calculation_problem. Society allocates resources in unpredictable ways. cupcake places make no sense, you can get them at the supermarket for cheaper, but people like them. I'm watching the rather marginal 80's movie Cocktail right now (it's tough going ) but theres a good scene where they are sitting there talking about how there was some guy who invented the plastic things at the end of shoe laces, and sugar packets and all the other things at their table they're sitting at. that's what having entrepenours does. People bust their butt creating seemingly insignificant things but when you put it all together it ends up leading, somehow, to a higher standard of living.

I just in general look at socialism and communism as economic systems to avoid all the political drama.

JaseSF

Often socialism in practice leads to communism. The ideal is far different that what often gets implemented in its name, but then you could argue the same is true for capitalist systems where the wealth is supposed to be redistributed but instead tends to be hoarded by those on top (so we instead get an oligarchy pretending to be a democracy)....there will never be a system that works like its ideal...

Still, I like the idea of people working together for the benefit of everyone. That has a certain appeal....reminds me of the community nature of many small towns where folks traditionally just help other folks out...
