What boggles my mind is that 9-10 Ernest P. Worrell movies were made.  I personally love the character.  I might pick up this box set today when I get the Gamera flicks, but it's like, 3 Ernest flicks and a couple other things with Ernest.  I gotta say, good for Jim Varney for stretching that series out.

i was looking at the ERNEST COMEDY BOX SET, looks f**king awesome...i am def going to order this. I had no idea there were any Ernest box sets, sweet!

If it's that Essential Ernest set I'd recommend getting it.  Ernest Goes to Africa is a horrible and almost entirely unfunny movie, and I'm sure Ernest In the Army isn't very good, but the extra stuff is what's worthwhile.  There're more commercials featuring the Ernest character than one could handle in one sitting (I think there almost 2 hours worth), and some weird short film collections (the Family Album one is interesting).

That's it.  I picked it up.  I'm a fan of Ernest and was looking up some commercials on Youtube yesterday.

The box set has all the commercials and some bloopers in "Ernest's Greatest Hits 1", while Ernest's Greatest Hits 2 has more bloopers, as well as some routines, like Ernest getting electrocuted while fixing a tv, or falling off a ladder.  Disc 2 has the Family Album, as well as Your World As I See It, which is Ernest and all his family members as well.

Ernest in The Army sounds actually kinda funny.  But sometimes, it sounds good on paper but doesn't get executed well.  But I'd never say his movies are generally considered to be 'good', so it's not a bad thing.  They're all funny, though.

I've seen that Ernest box set numerous times for sale new and used but have held off picking it up as there's a couple of serious bombs in it like Ernest Goes to Africa and Ernest Goes to Jail.

I really liked Varney's voice over work in the 2 Toy Story movies as the spring dog toy.  He's got some great moments in those.

I watched Ernest Goes to Africa last night.  Didn't compare to Ernest Scared Stupid or Ernest Saves Christmas, but I laughed at a few moments throughout.  I watched some of "Hey Vern, It's my Family Album", good stuff there.

Tonight I might watch Ernest's Greatest Hits, as it features a crapload of his commercials, plus bloopers.

I really loved the first four Ernest movies Ernest Goes To Camp, Ernest Saves Christmas, Ernest Goes To Jail, and Ernest Scared Stupid. I still really miss Jim Varney one great actor and comic I still remember him other shows in the 70's like Fernwood 2 Night. Evan Earp of The Rousters, and Ernest will always be my favorites.

I never realize Ernest was in so many commercials until tonight.  I was watching Ernest's Greatest Hits 1 and watched about a half hour of it, which was about 60 or so commercials, for like, Mello Yello, Orange Juice, Sprite, Ice Cream, Toyota, etc.

I read that they had actually done a movie called Ernest the Pirate, which was in post-production when Jim Varney died, and they didn't release it.  Jim was a great performer.  Shame he passed.

Considering the movies, I'm quite suprised nobody has touched those on this site yet.
All things considered, I might give Ernest Scared Stupid a review:

I love Ernest. There were a couple that I found absolutely boring, but I do have fond memories of watching Ernest Scared Stupid as a child.

Edited for spelling.

I've always found his holiday films "Ernest Saves Christmas" and "Ernest Scared Stupid," the best of those that I saw.

I'm a big Ernest fan myself. I own all but one film, namely "Ernest Goes to School," on DVD. I even have "Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam," an odd little film that features Varney in various roles, including Ernest in a very short cameo at the end. I think the last "great" Ernest movie was "Ernest Rides Again." Very enjoyable and fun movie. Watch out for those "Makita Warriors!"  :bouncegiggle:

How was Dr. Otto?  I wanna see it, as I think Varney's funny, both as Ernest and not.  I wanna get some of the other Ernest flicks on dvd that I haven't seen in a while.  It's been a few years since I saw Ernest Goes to Camp or Ernest Scared Stupid.  I watched Ernest Saves Christmas over the holidays.  Recently watched Ernest Goes to Africa and Ernest in the Army.

This is embarrassing to say, but I've seen Jim Varney in interviews, sans the Ernest persona, and he was actually kind of sexy.  He was intelligent and very well spoken, and when he wasn't trying to look like an idiot, he was quite handsome.

Mr_Vindictive

Man, I'm going to have to order that Ernest boxset now.  I believe I've seen most every Ernest film, and have yet to pick them up on DVD.

Dr Otto is one I believe I've seen.  I seem to recall Ernest dressed as like a witch/warlock at some point.  I remember catching it on cable years ago, and being surprised at just how "Un-Earnest-esque" the flick was.
