80's Beach Movie

i'm trying to find this '80's movie-- i think it's from '87 or '88, where a couple of guys are trying to raise money to buy a guitar and go through hell to try and raise money.  it takes place in california, LA, on the beach and used to be on HBO back in the late '80s early '90s.  unfortunately thats all i can remember...lol!
