Oops. I guess I jumped the gun. Just one more post before I can start frightening children with my cinematic fanatacism (as opposed to just using my face, like I normally do).

:teddyr: I replied to your thread about the Afrikaans language: please feel free to email or PM me if your daughter needs to know anything whatever to say to her friend.

And I greatly appreciate your humoring me in a bit of goofiness. When my daughter came and told us about her new friend, you were the first person I thought of. I told her, "Hey, I know someone from South Africa, too!" She didn't seem overly impressed, but maybe she'll be more grateful for my worldwide connections now that I can (with your help) teach her a few phrases. My pronunciation will likely stink, but maybe she'll get the general idea. Does Afrikaans sound pretty close to Dutch, one of its main ancestor languages, or has it strayed from that sound?

Yes, Afrikaans is similar to Dutch. My maternal grandmother spoke Dutch and English fluently. The weird thing is that she was a translator during the Anglo Boer war of 1899 ~ 1902: my mom only told me this a few years back. I always wondered why this grand old lady (she lived to be 97) spoke English so well and now I know.

Nahh, I don't think your pronunciation will stink at all.  Karma for your new FFOHCinema status.

I just joined the club, scaring children is a great past-time.

Welcome, Derf.  You need to send your membership dues, avatar fees, and nerd surcharges to me . . . I'll send my address.

Hey, wait a minute: I've been on this board longer than you. I'm just the quiet type; you know, like a serial killer is quiet...

It just took me a while to find a thousand things to say.

By the way, Indianasmith, how's it going with Ike in your neck of the woods? We're being spared most of it; I'm starting to wonder if we'll even be seeing any rain from this one.

Actually he could've been here longer than that. If you check the profiles of all us old timers you'll see that the enrollment date  is the same for all of us, Nov. 30, 2005, that's when Andrew changed over to the current forum . I've been posting here since 2002.  Some of us are just a little more prolific (or our personal lives are non-existent).

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

I believe I fall into category 2.  :bouncegiggle:

Yeah, I joined the forum in 2003 (I think). I'm just not as personable as some others, so I don't say much, as I tend to get in turns overly argumentative, syrupy sweet or ginormously goofy. In real life, I'm usually just ginormously goofy, though.
