When I worked at a department store in college the advice was to wash ones hands while on break, lunch, or after leaving for the day.  Cash is often contaminated with all sorts of nasty surprises.  Someone at the store once told me someone - either government or company - once had some cash tested and it tested positive for crack cocaine.  Some people said they seemed to get ill a bit more easily once they became cashiers.
