I use trendmicro internet security for my firewall/anti-virus/anti-adware security kind of stuff and I've not had a single adware/popup problem. I can't remember what it costs, but I got a couple year subscription for three computers.

Sounds like you got some bad spyware there RC.
I recommend downloading Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware.

Run one, then run the other.  That should clear a lot of it up.
After that, be sure to run both at least once a week.

The problem is....Tara is the administator..an she's in a nursing home.  :bluesad:

I'm so sorry to hear that.

My thoughts and prayers are with Tara and you, and your family.

This tool rescued my computer when it was acting very similar to what you described. I don't know about administrator privileges with it or not. It is run in safe mode, and if you can restart the computer in safe mode, then you may be able to use it.

You can find a fairly extensive list of spyware scanners and tools, many that are freeware, at http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

A good, and free firewall and malware scanner can be found at http://www.comodo.com/index.html

I switched from Norton to Trend Micro about a year ago and I've had absolutely no complaints, either.

At least it's a software issue, rather than hardware going bad.

Yep, you will need administrator access to install some of the anti-spyware programs.  Once you do that and install the anti-spyware programs you should be OK.  Some of those adware/spyware programs can get dug in.  You delete them and they keep coming back.  The trick is then finding the program that is "fixing" all the bad programs you are removing.

I noticed some good news lately.  Intercage, which has serviced a lot of malware and spyware sites, was effectively blacklisted hard enough that their providers dropped them.  They found a big provider to put them back on, but got dropped again.  That happened about 3 times.  It was like a bad Dracula movie, but I think that they are finally dead.  Also, Alpha Red is now dying.  They got sued by Microsoft because their (I believe it was) CEOwas the person behind Registry Cleaner XP, which was scareware ("You have 100 viruses!  Buy our product to remove them." - all of which was a lie).

A lot of the lucrative malware/adware will probably move their hosting to Russia or other places they can find, "bulletproof - no questions asked" hosting.
