Well, ran/walked.

I entered a three-mile race but I couldn't do it because the cold was setting off my ashtma big time.  Later, still p**sed off about that, I went to the gym and tried three miles on the treadmill.  I walked 3.0mph 'til I was warmed up, then ran 5.0mph as long as I could, walked 3.0mph until I was rested, etc.

Total time 51:44.  I don't think that's too bad for someone who only started running a couple of weeks ago.

It takes time to condition everything, and the first few weeks is just your body getting used to recovering from the exercise.  After you get past that, your time and recovery speed will start to improve.  The main thing is just to make a schedule and keep at it.

obama runs AND smokes, which is ridiculous

Which besides being a completely out-of-place political comment, has what to do with akiratubo taking up running?

As Andrew said, it takes time and conditioning. Don't try to overdo yourself all at once. I used to run quite a bit. Several months ago, after not running for a couple of years I ran three or four miles fairly strenuously and ended up either bruising or straining the muscle in the bottom of my foot. Nothing like a few days of pronounced limping to brighten things up.

Luckily I found a cane at work and got to walk around like Dr. Gregory House for fun.

Well, good on you, Akiratubo. I recommend finding a good path you would enjoy walking along anyway. Should make it a lot easier to keep up the routine, which is the most important part of running.
Every dead body that is not exterminated becomes one of them. It gets up and kills. The people it kills, get up and kill.
