My favorite adult swim cartoon is the first season of Sea lab and especially  "the gert pilot" and the other pre first season thing.  I'm a pretentious ass in other words. I like some of the other stuff but I think it often degenerated more into juvenile swim, perhaps in a misguided effort to compete with South Park and the like.  The bedrock of what I'll watch as far as comedy on tv is the nexus of the Simpsons and Seinfeld, so anything that's not rather alot like those is going to probably get a thumbs down.

I was at first encouraged by this, then a little bored and ultimately impressed.  I liked the sort of convenionalness of it, it wasn't trying to be wacky every 5 seconds, it had an actual plot and character development and a story and so forth.  There were some ho hum ish episodes but then towards the end of the disk it picked up with one where all these villains come to a yard sale that was basically larry david meets superfriends or something and really entertaining and inspired.  So inspired that I actually, get ready for it, kept the DVD for an EXTRA DAY so I could finish it!! If you knew how cheap I was you'd see that for the ringing endorsement that it truly is.

I own the first and second seasons, I do love me some Venture Brothers.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

I like what I've seen of this, and I don't like most of the rest of Adult Swim.  I think you're right (if I read you correctly), the rest of the shows seem to feel like they have to be controversial and shocking to compete with South Park, but just come off looking juvenile and derivative.  With its focus on plot and character it feels like a real show, rather than just an attempt to impress pot-smoking college students with the amount of hip, callous humor you can fit into an episode.  And it can still be nasty and edgy when it wants to be: that sick "Scooby Doo" parody was actually kind of frightening.
I'll take you places the hand of man has not yet set foot...

While it's not my favorite Adult Swim cartoon (that slot belongs to Metalocyolpse) it's one of the better ones.  Below ATHF but still miles above the awful Squidbillies.
At least, that's what Gary Busey told me...

It's basically Jonny Quest on crack.
