Snuff- A Documentary about killing on camera. This is the only one I couldn't watch, because it features clips from films like Snuff, Guinea Pig, Faces of Death, etc.

Yes. I get uncomfortable any time that happens in a movie, and I actually feel a strange sense of relief if the character is then killed off. Death in a movie is tolerable and expected, making.... that.... a fate worse than death. Seems wrong, even in the realm of movie villainry, to chop off somebody's goodies if you're not prepared to finish him off. It bothers me even when they don't actually show anything, like in Foxy Brown. Coincidentally, that was also a situation where it was more disturbing because the guy was apparently still alive.

Shocking Asia takes it to another level by showing a detailed surgical procedure that would seem to be the real deal, at least from any information I can find.

The other really touchy thing for me is any movie in which children or animals suffer excessively. I don't even like being teased with the prospect of a little kid being harmed, unless it's clearly a setup for a daring rescue. Used to be kids were off limits, unless the plot depended on it. That's not always the case anymore.

I started a long post about the movie Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist, but I had problems finishing it (the post, not the film).

The film is a documentary about a guy with cystic fibrosis who took control of his life by putting his body through absolute torture. Flanagan expected, as all CF sufferers do, to die very young. He "conquered" his illness by getting involved in S&M at a young age, and spent the rest of his life chasing that goal.

The majority of the film tracks the damage he does to himself, which he finds sexually exciting. At one point, he literally hammers a nail through the tip of his penis. In case you think I'm exaggerating, I am not. You will literally watch a man hammer a nail through the head of his penis.

I can take self-mutilation, but there are still a few points in this film that make me queasy.

The first is that he meets a young girl suffering from CF, who he introduces to his S&M world. She was underage at the time, but we have an extended scene of him fantasizing about her.

More disturbing, Flanagan's last visit to the hospital is faithfully recorded. Last visit because he dies; we see everything but the very moment of death.

It's rough going, and it isn't a movie.

Music score trivia time: Scorsese was unsatisfied with the vibraphone 'sting' Bernard Herrmann score for the scene. "Play it backwards" said Herrmann. So they did. That's the odd sound you hear at that moment.

Uwe Boll's Darfur was disturbing and frightening in its' realistic depiction of violence ~ the ending made me cry bitterly.

Jans Rautenbach's eerie Jannie Totsiens is a uniquely disturbing experience to watch: it deals with the inmates in a South African asylum and the angel of discord ~ a mute, catatonic mathematics professor ~ in their midst. Having said that it is scary and disturbing, it is also very funny, believe it or not.

'Un Chien Andalou' (1929) is still a hearty contender in my book.
You don't often come across a closeup of a razor slicing an eyeball in half, particularly in a film from the 1920's.

Yuk It's available on YouTube; critics and film historians have been commenting about the eyeball, but I wonder if anybody really gets it...

I actually just watched Un Chien Andalou recently.  A friend of mine paid $40 for the DVD.  Real ripoff if you ask me.  So I borrowed it and showed it to my girlfriend and my best friend.  They thought I was crazy to even think of watching it.  (They both looked away at the eye scene).

Though, just for the record, a cow's eye was used in the eye cutting scene.  That whole movie was really just Dali and Buñuel writing down their dreams and filming them in the literal sense, so of course it's going to be effed up!

That was a nice bit of cinematography. They just shot really close to the (dead) cow's face and washed the shot out with light to the point that you couldn't see the fur. So simple, yet very effective.

Don't worry. It's a genetic disorder that mostly affects the internal organs. Has nothing to do with excessive acts of masochism. Since people with it seldom live beyond their 20s, this guy had nothing to lose by abusing his body. I suppose cultivating an enjoyment of pain is not the worst way of coping with an incurable disease. Very practical, in fact.
