I was watching the Thing recently and I noticed that it set itself right up for a sequel in the end, but none was ever produced.

What other movies left a continuous or open ending but didn't make any money so no one produced a sequel ?

The Conan franchise was supposed to continue but never made it past The Destroyer

REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS.  And ends, apparently.

THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER . . .

actually, I think they are releasing the sequel later this year - about 20 years or more late!

1998's DEEP RISING ended with our heroes and heroine stranded on an island. A jungle and volcanos in the backround and a load roar left Finnigan to utter "Now what?"  We never found out. :bluesad:

Buckaroo Bonzai mentioned a sequel at the end, and the movie had a few references to other nemesis that were supposed to be explained in future episodes of the franchise.

Good call on Buckaroo Banzai. I remember that. I think they expected it to do better than it did.

Here's a ridiculous one that was set up for a sequel but I doubt they were very serious:

Kung Pao: Enter the Fist.

Flash Gordon (1980)

I'm actually kind of pleased, as it made it even more pleasantly cheesy.

Mel Brooks History of the World Part 1, although I suppose that was part of the joke.

Well, Eragon and The Golden Compass were supposed to get franchises, but the Box Office said otherwise.

The Incredibles
Chronicles of Riddick (although maybe it doesn't count if it's already a sequel)
While they resolved fairly well, I would've liked to see the stories in Dark City, Boiler Room and Quigley Down Under get continued.
I kind of like that they never did a sequel to The Thing. The ambiguity of the end made it more haunting for me  I suppose it's only a matter of time before it gets a "gritty reboot"

REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS.  And ends, apparently.

One morning I looked at the channel guide and saw Remo Williams.  I was very excited but it was a series.  The teacher was the same, but the dude doing Remo was not.  Very silly show.

So this movie did continue, just not as a movie.

Sad.

Just about everything I've seen by Full Moon or Troma seems to be set up that way.

Recalling the pre-release hype, I think "MegaForce" was supposed to franchised. Even as a kid, I was glad that didn't happen.

Though it wasn't the intention, That last line in "Serenity" just screams, "To be continued".

At the end of Reptilicus, there's a shot of the disembodied leg starting to regenerate. With the ominous music, one would assume that there would be another movie. But, not surprisingly, it never happened.
