What's all this about Del Toro going to the South Pole to film At The Mountains of Madness, with Cameron producing the whole thing?

I have been waiting for this one a long time, Del Toro has had this in the planning stages for years. Now that James Cameron is throwing his weight in I can see it becoming a reality. Actually filming in Antarctica poses all sorts of logistical problems though, so I realistically don't see the entire shoot being done there.

Oh course the company suits who probably have no idea who Lovecraft is have to question every element that would make this a good film after all 130 million is a lot to drop on a horror production.

I so want this movie to get done and with James Cameron on board hopefully it will. If done right this could be one of the greatest horror movies ever made and go right up there with the Exorcist and The Thing. It would blow people out of the water if Del Toro does it like he wants it.

I remain sceptical. It will be a big-name big-production thing, so you'll need to draw in the crowds.

And that means a likeable hero, a love interest, oneliners, explosions all around and big finale in which the hero is chased by Cthulhu with ice shelves breaking up all around.

Sure, Del Toro can make a classic horror movie based on this, but will the corporation let him?

I at least would like to see him take a crack at it.  "Pan's Labyrinth" and "The Devil's Backbone" show that he can do fantasy horror, and he can be creative with it.  Also, he has a thing with creatures with weird eyes (the Eater of Children and Angel of Death from his other films), so he's already got a leg up on the Shoggoth angle...

I wouldn't start ordering my theater tickets right away, as the film isn't suppose to hit theaters till 2013. And I also have questions about the budget. $130 million may seem like alot, but if you are going to film it in the Antarctica, which has little or no film logistics, so almost everything has to be brought in . . . ? Even if they do minimum filming in the Antarctica, and most of it on sound stages, I think a budget closer to $200 million than $130 million is called for.

Seeing the lack of box office succes of Scott Pilgrim, I fear the worst. If you're making a movie with, let us call it geek appeal, there is simply not enough target audience out there to warrant a big budget. So, if you want to make your money back, you'll have to draw in the Mindless Masses.This means the movie will have to be just another big blockbuster.

Not necessarily.  Like I said, wait and see.  It might be, it might not be.  Lord knows not everything that comes out in theaters is a blockbuster.  Who's to say that this movie will get a huge release, and not a limited LA/NY release?

Del Toro has always had much more success in the US than Edgar Wright, and many people are still sweet on Pan's Labyrinth after its awards season success that this film will be given alot more mileage with audiences than Scott Pilgrim which really only has a small chance to win anything in editing, sound or visual design only.
