Broken computer monitor

I found a monitor in my apartment complex but I couldn't get it to work, now it's kind of just taking up space, but I've been told (dunno if it's true or not though) that you can't just toss those out into the garbage because they've got chemical in them that can be dangerous.  So, how do I get rid of this thing?

Anyone know?

Around here, the local Goodwill stores have a recycling program for old tvs and monitors. You just drop it off at the Goodwill store and they (I suppose) get a small amount for scrap.
