Red moon's are a natural thing, Has something to do with particles in the atmosphere I believe.

Nonetheless it seems like a cool thing to witness!

I've seen it before and also rings around the moon. I've heard both said to be omens of impending bad weather.

I've seen a lunar eclipse and the moon was blood red.  Don't know what might have caused it last night though.  Maybe some oddball atmospheric conditions?

I'm pretty sure it always orbits the earth at about the same rate though   TeddyR

We had one a couple of months ago, a red moon is freaky and pretty cool.  Unfortunately I'm on the other side of the planet so we didn't have a red moon, as it was sunny.   Bluesad

I saw it too. Just after sunset, close to the horizon. A red crescent moon. I was on my way to the store, but I went back in to tell my wife about it.

I also missed this when I was at Japanese camp. This can only mean ONE THING!

Dracula has risen from the grave and the Devil's castle now spreads it's evil through Transylvania.

Now Simon Belmont must destroy Dracula and crumble the Devil's castle, and restore peace to Transylvania, once again.

...Damn... I'm a nerd.

...Ah what the hell? PLAY THE SONG!

I've seen lots of freaky sh!t that I guess were optical illusions, atmospheric effects, etc.  I can remember seeing the moon hugely magnified where it filled the sky about three blocks from the ocean, but as you walked to the shore, the effect receded to normalcy!!!   The moon tonight is First Quarter I guess, and it was bright orange, but it MOVED the hour or so I sat outside tonight... it's shift was quite obvious (like every 5 minutes I'd notice it had moved).

This is off the top of my head, so forgive me if I get the science wrong.

Most likely it was a function of the particulates in the air, or other atmospheric conditions. The reflected light coming from the moon must pass through the air surrounding the Earth before it meets your eye. If there's a lot of particles in the air, it may change or block certain wavelengths of light, so the only color that reaches you is red or some such color.

This is even more likely if the moon is about to fall beneath the horizon, which would be the case if you saw it set very quickly. It's very analogous to a sunset. When the sun is right above your head it has a thin layer of atmosphere to get through. When it is approaching the horizon, it has a lot more of the Earth's atmosphere to get through, due to the angle. Picture the rich colors of a sunset in smog filled cities like L.A. or Phoenix. Rich reds and oranges because there's so much crap in the air. If you saw the moon right before it fell beneath the horizon it could very easily appear red.

Beautiful thing to see if you pay attention to it.

Then again, I'm not ruling out the resurrection of Vlad Tepes. Just saying.
