In light of the current thread about Michael Bay's TMNT project, I thought I'd start this thread. I know it's been done, but it's still a fun topic.

Who are your Top 5 most hated filmmakers? I'll start with mine, in no particular order:

Roland Emmerich: I actually think that Roland Emmerich does not know how to direct actors. With the majority of his movies, I get the feeling that the movie could be better if there weren't so many awkward performances or moments with actors.

Michael Bay: I can't think of a movie of his that I was truly entertained by. I was mildly entertained by Armageddon (but not much) and the only reason I was mildly entertained by Coyote Ugly was because I was watching it while getting drunk with Navy buddies and making fun of it.

Uwe Boll: Go figure. I've honestly tried to watch some of his movies but can never bring myself to finish them. Now, Trevor has raved about Darfur on a number of occasions, and I don't doubt his word at all. And I have every intention of watching it at some point. Aside from that possible exception, I've found every one I've tried to watch unforgiveable.

John Waters: I'm sorry. I know there are hip indy fans out there that love his films, but I can't stand them. I know I'm supposed to like him, and he's supposed to be kitschy and campy, but I find every one that I've seen except Serial Mom (I like that one) just really annoying. I think he is good at having a recognizable quirky look, but that by far surpasses his filmmaking abilities.

Anne Fletcher: Her body of work consists of Step Up, 27 Dresses, and The Proposal. This is a small number of directorial efforts, but those three films alone are disasters. The problem is people pay to see this s**t so I am sure she will make plenty more.

Ah, Friedberg and Seltzer are a good call. I'm surprised they didn't come to mind for my list.

I'd like to toss the Polonia brothers name out there.

JaseSF

1) Tom Brady (the man responsible for directing both Bucky Larson and The Hot Chick, should have stuck to producing)
2) Michael Bay (the man just makes mindless nonsense and hopes no one notices or cares amongst the FX and explosions)
3) Barry Levinson (granted he's done some good stuff here and there but also some incredibly painful to sit through films)
4) Rich Christiano (pushes a religious agenda)
5) Steve Rash (has a decent flick or two but most of it is garbage)

On a sidenote, I consider the following five really overrated (talented but still overrated):

1) James Cameron
2) Christopher Nolan
3) Peter Jackson
4) Zack Synder
5) Kathyrn Bigelow

Thanks, Flick.

Darfur left me crying, in distress and in anger: combine those three and you have a lethal cocktail of emotions. I will never forget what happened after the lights went on in that Cape Town cinema on March 18th 2010: no clapping, no talking, not even a cough. Here and there a sound of someone snuffling at tears (that was probably me) and there were one or two people audibly crying, in addition to me. I didn't dare look behind me so I studied the wall curtains, hoping no-one would make eye contact with me otherwise I would start bawling again. The producer Chris Roland was present and he apologized to us if we though we were there to be entertained, saying "Uwe and myself did not set out to entertain anyone."

I asked to shake his hand and almost hugged the guy: that night, I couldn't sleep, nor could I eat anything.  :bluesad:

At most Horror communities where I post, Rob Zombie and Eli Roth would be among the 5 most hated. Personally I enjoy their movies.

I'll second Zack Snyder as talented but overrated.

As for my personal most hated Filmmakers, only one comes to mind: David DeCoteau. I love his early work, but his movies got incredibly dull over the years.

Limiting myself to "current" hot directors:

Chris Nolan - is a pretty good director but can't write worth a damn.  He should direct a script he had no part in writing.
Robert Rodriguez - just plain sucks.
Zack Snyder - boring
Peter Jackson - Dead Alive was a fluke.  Everything else he's made has been awful.
Tarsem Singh - (reason gives way to inarticulate rage)

Believe it or not, I don't hate Michael Bay.  The man is completely up front about not giving a damn about the quality of his movies, only the money they make.  He doesn't pretend to be anything but a guy who panders to the lowest common denominator.  And, on those rare occasions when you can tell he does give a damn, he can turn in some surprisingly good work.

Uli Lommel.  Had a minor hit in the 80s with HALLOWEEN knock-off THE BOOGEYMAN, but in recent years his output has consisted of films loosely inspired by real-life serial killers, which make a mockery of the families of those killed by said murderers as well as the police and detectives who brought them to justice.
