April is the cruelest month, but maybe these weird movies will help you get through it?

BAD BOY BUBBY (1993): Upgraded to Certified Weird status! "I do not want to be in the business of denying the weirdness of movies that feature middle-aged feral children, cling-wrap murders and bizarre swings in tone, especially when they have rabid cult followings and excellent critical reputations."

LABYRINTH (1986): "That shot of rising estrogen distinguishes Labyrinth from other Oz/Alice in Wonderland fairy tale variations, giving it a subtext that goes over the heads of the tots in the audience but leaves adults with additional nuggets to ponder (and no, that’s not another reference to Bowie’s stretch pants)."

MY JOY (2010): "My Joy‘s confusing journey into the Russian heart of darkness makes more sense after a second viewing, although thanks to plentiful narrative elisions there are still many mysteries that are never resolved."

LICENSE TO KILL (1989): DEBUNKING THE DALTON BOND MYTHS: "[Dalton's] reboot of 007 is not that different from Christopher Nolan's revamping of Batman away from the camp parody the series had fallen into and back to the original, edgier conception."-AE

Labyrinth was an excellent film....funny for the kids and with entertaining yet slightly creepy undertones.

Labyrinth was an excellent film....funny for the kids and with entertaining yet slightly creepy undertones.

I like it a lot too! But Bowie's prominent package always gets to me... creepy, indeed!

EVEN DWARFS STARTED SMALL (1970): Certified Weird! "...a grotesque parade of cannibalistic chickens, insects dressed as a bride and groom, a crucified monkey, a defecating camel, and dwarfs running amok destroying everything in sight. Presented in bleak black and white in a heartlessly cold documentary style, it's the gloomiest depiction of the triumph of the irrational ever filmed."

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR (1973): "..in the show’s best known number, 'Superstar,' Judas returns from the dead in a white suit appropriate for a Vegas-era Elvis, descending from the heavens on a shiny cross and surrounded by flashy dancing girls. Heck yes, it’s jarring, but fits the overall tone."-SW

FASCINATION (1979): "Brigitte Lahaie supplies Fascination‘s highlight when she transforms into a buxom grim reaper; armed with a scythe, she goes on a killing spree wrapped only in a thin black cloak that reveals her bosom when the slightest breeze blows."

DUCK SOUP (1933): "Although their films were probably not considered weird in their day, they have evolved into time capsule misfits because of shifting aesthetics and ideologies. That Duck Soup is still, unfortunately, frighteningly relevant possibly goes unnoticed."-AE

FELLINI SATYRICON (1969): CERTIFIED WEIRD! "Fellini seizes upon the fragmentary nature of his classical source material as an excuse to fly off on flights of phantasmagorical fancy; he sets his camera to observe these imaginary denizens of gluttonous old Rome as if they were alien lifeforms. Satyricon is the work of a master filmmaker at his most self-indulgent—but when tremendous talent indulges itself, the results are typically spectacular."

HELLACIOUS ACRES: THE CASE OF JOHN GLASS (2011): "...there’s plenty of weirdness filling up the empty spaces: a psychedelic opening with a disembodied voice giving the backstory while we look at a heat-imaging map of the resuscitated John Glass, a mutant baby encased in a jar, Glass carrying around (and carrying on conversations with) the severed hand of a fellow soldier, bad trips caused by teleportation drugs, a hallucinated waiter of the wasteland, and of course the lightbulb-shaped alien energy jellyfish that now prowl the Earth."

LA JETEE (1962): "...there is much more to marvel at in this trip deep into the abysses of mind and memory than just its trick ending; it's an utterly unique film experience that serious science fiction fans (in particular) will want to savor and remember."

TOP HAT (1935): "The dance numbers are filmed in crisp black and white. Who the hell needs color? Who the hell needs reality?  Astaire's ability to make it all look easy is his genius, and you'll be dazzled as he takes his cane and rat-a-tat-tats an entire chorus of top hats to a beautifully artificial set."-AE

I thought you were suggesting that all the excerpts were all too positive and sounded like ad copy. I've been too sweet and positive lately and really need to write something peevish and nasty to clear my palette. When will Harmony Korine release another movie?

I like reading film criticism even more than music criticism.  It's particularly enjoyable if the reviewer knows their ass from their elbow.  Or if you agree with them.

SANS SOLEIL (1983): Certified Weird! "Sans Soleil visits cat shrines, the slaughter of a giraffe, and a monkey porn museum in its wanderings. If that’s not weird enough for you, the film takes time out of its busy schedule to recreate the imaginary nightmares of passengers dozing on a Tokyo subway."

FREAKED (1993): "Coogin’s first escape attempt, which involves a milkman and a turd shaped like a naked Kim Basinger, is thwarted by a pair of giant Rastafarian eyeballs with machine-guns. Why? Because that’s always funny."-RS/MR

STRINGS (2004): "...the movie’s real pleasures come from admiring the meticulously constructed puppets as they dance across the boldly-lit diorama sets, and even more from the film’s creation of a complete marionette culture and mythology."

42ND STREET (1933): "[Busby] Berkeley’s choreography can be best described as 'Misogynist Surrealism.' While Berkeley was hardly the only misogynist in Hollywood, nobody objectified women at the level Berkeley did; and he did it with such a two-fisted original style that nobody at the time seemed to care."-AE
