I remember watching that episode as a kid, and even though I didn't completely understand why, I couldn't stop laughing. I think I can safely blame my family for being drawn to the dark side of humor.

Having a Mom who was and is a feminist, I couldn't understand some of the people who hated this series because it was "about a woman on her own who wants to get ahead in life".  All I could say to Mary was "Right on, sister!"
