Movies that promised a sequel ...

... and of course, didn't give us one.

It's just something I was thinking about.  Plenty of movies have ended with a cliffhanger or a setup for a sequel that never happened.  I've always kind of wondered what the sequels to things like Masters of the Universe, Mario Bros, Street Fighter, Remo Williams, and those sort of things would have been like.

Well, maybe not Remo Williams.  That movie was kinda horrible.

The others, though, sure.  I would have watched another He-man movie or a Mario bros.

So, come on.  Share some thought about what you think sequels could have been or of other movies that intended to continue but never followed through.

Two that definitely promised sequels but did not deliver:

DOCTOR DETROIT

THE SWORD AND THE SORCEROR
"I shall smite you in the nostrils with a rod of iron, and wax your spleen with Efferdent!!"

"Science Fiction & Nostalgia have become the same thing!" - T Bone Burnett

Kubrick, Nolan, Tarantino, Wan, Iñárritu, Scorsese, Chaplin, Abrams, Wes Anderson, Gilliam, Kurosawa, Villeneuve - the elite

apparently Airplane 2 finishes with a teaser-trailer for Airplane 3. I can't find a clip of said trailer though, but a few places on the net mention it...

The end of Battlefield Earth promises a sequel that thankfully never happened. I'm told that the events of the film only covered the first half of the novel and the second film would've been the other half.

Yep, the very end of the credits for "Airplane II" state "Coming soon...AIRPLANE III!" and then show a shot of William Shatner (in character as Lunar Commander Buck Murdock) saying something like "Of course...that's just what they'd expect us to do."

Not sure if it meant that they were seriously planning to make a "III," or if it was just one last silly gag, though.
"If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

ah, okay. sounds like it was probably meant to be taken as seriously as the rest of the movie then

THE GOLDEN COMPASS and ERAGORN were definitely trying to start franchises.
THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN, which I was kind of surprised how much I enjoyed. I would've watched continued adventures for sure...
Through the darkness of future past
The magician longs to see
One chance opts between two worlds
Fire walk with me

In that regards, I'll add the ending for Mel' Brook's History of the World.

At least, that's what Gary Busey told me...

One obscure, stupid movie: SCALPS.
At the very end it told of an upcoming sequel called SCALPS II: THE RETURN OF D.J..  Thank God it never happened.

LOL SCALPS! I watched that movie last year and thought it was strange and terrible but kind of funny and weirdly entertaining at the same time. I also thought the very end "twist" scene was kind of cool. With that said it's a terrible movie and I wouldn't recommend it. ha. I had no clue it hinted for a sequel...

Buckaroo Bonsai

At the end of the credits, it even says "Buckaroo Banzai will return in Buckaroo Banzai: Against the World Crime League"
"Slugs?  He created slugs? I would have started with lasers, six o'clock, day one!" -- Evil, Time Bandits

JaseSF

Godzilla (1998)
The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002)

perhaps best we never got those though...
