Dunked in manure? Dosen't sound too much like fun.  "Danke mein Herr" sounds much better 

Be that as is, there are many ways to thank someone in German. 

If it's an older person or family member, it's always formal.  An example would be " Ich danke Ihnen für Ihre Hilfe"  or " I thank you for your help" in the formal sense. 

Informal would be "Ich danke Du für deine Hilfe"  (where Ihnen is formal for "you" and Du is informal for "you".  Informal is for friends and\or trusted family members. But my grandmother always said when in doubt, go with the formal.
