What did you think of DC's first R-rated movie?

I liked it when it finally got around to the comic. All of the Batgirl stuff at the beginning was not very good. I get why they put it in there, Barbara Gordon's role in the original comic isn't exactly progressive. That said, the whole Paris Franz story was a joke.

Mark Hamill once again give a great performance, and his jokes are horrible in the best way. I wouldn't go out of your way to see this, though.

I saw it in a movie theater, where it played for two nights.

Same thoughts here (not to reiterate/repeat what I said in the podcast...but I have thought about it some more...):

The whole first act with Batgirl was unnecessary and could've been dropped. I think the bat sex scene was totally out of place and came off kinda creepy. I think I seen a meme of Batman and Batgirl with a pornesque title that said "40 year old man bangs best friends daughter" or something to that effect.  It's not that it was offensive or anything; it was just yuck.

It would have made more sense if her and Nightwing had tension that ultimately leads to that, since A. it would make more sense since they have shown signs of mutual attraction over the years (at least in the few comics I have/have read) and B. it wouldn't have been so unsettling seeing as how they are peers rather than a mentor/student relationship.

Ultimately, this film made Batgirl look really pathetic; made Batman kinda creepy; and made the whole first act a waste.

However, yes, Mark Hammil's Joker scenes were the bomb. I'm not too keen on the musical number, but at least it fit and was hilarious (and it did come from the comic, too, if memory serves me right).

I did like the end scene in both the comic and the film, though.

I still theorize that the author's mission was to write a story based on what it would take for Batman to kill Joker (...er one of the three of them, according to the comics a couple of months ago (I haven't been keeping up since).

Thanks for posting!

I really didn't get why this was rated R.  We didn't see any nudity and I don't recall too much profanity.  Plenty of blood and implied stuff but certainly nothing that couldn't fit into the PG-13 demographic.  I agree the first half was pretty unnecessary.  I thought this was going to follow the book (which I have) for more than just one half of the movie.

It was ... ok.  I think the people making the movie didn't really "get" the story.  I wish it had the ugly, garish colors from the original printing of the graphic novel.  Hamill delivered the joke right, though, and Kevin Conroy's unsteady, forced laughter at the end was perfect.

Honestly, I enjoyed the tacked-on Batgirl stuff more, and would like to have seen an entire movie dedicated to it.  With the R rating, they could have gotten really sleazy with the Paris Franz stuff.

You ask. He tries to answer, if he can. I haven't see it, but . . .?! the MPAA thought the bloody images in the film were bloody enough, that the film deserved a R-rating. Also they felt the content was disturbing enough, that it should be watched with an adult present.
